My old driver that still goes yard.

Over the last year or so I've been really struggling with the driver, It's always been one my strengths so this is particularly frustrating, about a month ago, in preparation for Mid-Am qualifying I decided to go through old drivers I had in the garage I had good success with.

I found my Adams Speedline 9032LS shafted with a Tour AD GP-7x and just a touch of melt in the toe. FYI this driver is nearly 10 years old (I played it for about 3 years or so before moving into an SLDR trying to find "better")

I took it out to the range, and as soon as I put it behind the ball, there was that feeling of confidence I once had. I was hitting absolute rockets with a 3-5 yard fade. A shot I have't seen on the reg for almost a year.

The next day I went out at shot the easiest 67 I've had in years. I felt confident, my speed was up because of it and I hit 14 fairways.

If I were to put the Adams driver on trackman against my M2 setup, sure maybe the M2 will have more optimal numbers on well struck shots, But without confidence there is no point. I'm sure I'll move out of the adams again at some point, but hopefully when it happens, I'll move into something with more confidence built.

moral of the story...Don't be afraid to go back in time to rebuild.

Does anyone else have a similar story?

Late last season I switched to a Srixon Z545 with Rogue Silver 70 and didn't have much success. I changed shafts to a Speeder 757 Evo this year and hit it a little better but I still wasn't consistent. I decided to try a Z765 head with that shaft and it was even worse. I've since sold the Z765 head and Speeder shaft and went back to my driver from 2010. Something about the Enzo shaft and higher lofted low spin DCT head just work for me. I saved the Z545 for a driver project I'm having built for my dad's birthday.

Considering the trifling trade-in value one gets for used clubs, it makes sense to mothball the clubs you've loved that were bumped out of the bag.

Absolutely nothing wrong at all with that. Contrary to popular belief it does not have to be the newest latest greatest thing to play good. Sounds like to me with the shaft and the hot melt "mods" you have found the perfect combo for you and your game. Like you said you felt confidence standing over the ball with it and that my friend means a whole lot. Good Luck to you in your Mid Am Endevors

I’ve got two, not sure what I’m gonna do with them but they never getting sold.

1. FTiz tour 9’5 / Fubuki Tour 63x : High low spin bombs that while I was playing it, netted me long drives on at least 4 occasions, this club just goes straight, awesome.

2. Razr Fit 8,5 / Fubuki K 70x : Mid/High low spin baby fades all day, can be drawn when needed, this was so long for me, it was the 1st driver that left me with a short iron on a par5. The harder I swung it, the better it performed, it also has the sweetest composite sound ever.

I hit my gamer so well though that I haven’t had a chance to game these in a long while, took out the FTIZ last week for a game & boom, right up there with my XR16 PRO.

I seriously have no need to get another driver, if something unforeseen happens to my gamer, I’ll grab any of these two & be done with it.

I have a couple old drivers that go just as far as my current one. Titleist 905t and 910d2. But the g400 lst is so much more forgiving on miss hits. Which is most of my drives these days.

How does a driver go yard? Isn’t that a baseball euphemism? Never heard it used in golf. Good on you for changing it up!

As for old drivers vs new drivers...I find that with a lot of the geezers I play with, they hold onto their older sets and older woods merely for the confidence they are used to with them.

Case and point, my dad bought a callaway rogue and is not happy with it. He continues to put hai SLDR into play and let the Rogue collect dust. I use it from time to time but, I prefer my g400 LST more. It’s a generational thing, in my mind.

this has been apart of my golf game for as long as I can remember. I just recently got rid of a bunch of stuff that I thought would revolutionize my game back to the way I use to play, I've had the realization a time of two over my golfing career. Stick with what works and what you are confident in, because confidence is 90% of the game. I still play an older driver to today's standards and not many that I play with can out drive me and hit fairways at the same time. Play what works!

If only my old M2 did crack I’d be ok. I’ve been through 6+ setups since the accident and nothing worked. Could not find another head that felt as good or performed as well as the original setup. Definitely keep all old setups that work, you never know when you will need to call on them again.

+3 on the Ping Rapture V2 with Blueboard. I've been searching for years and nothing is close. Currently using a Ping G with the Diamana B Series, which on paper should be perfect, but just isn't the same.

I have many stories like that:

Drivers I could play today since getting my Gmax (which is shelved): 2016m2 (I am playing this again - see sig), Rapture v1, Rapture v2, TM tp Burner 07, Tm510tp, I stupidly sold the last 2 on the list but will grab them when I spot the right deal

I have a similar problem with my irons: I have tried 4 or 5 sets since I got my PING s55's and every freaking time the s55's come back in: 3 notables>> Cally X-proto blades, Bridgestone J15 musclebacks, Titleist Tm-b's etc etc

And same deal with my wedges. I have tried numerous Vokey and/or Ping wedge set combo's but I keep going back to my 2009 sm2 satin Vokey's - some of which are TVD's - with the FUN grooves. I know what they will do flight and spin wise ... and to me they feel the best

The ONLY place I haven't gone backwards is with the Callaway Apex hybrids, some sort of golf designer god invented those babies

I moved from super-advanced irons on rebar shafts back to DPCs on s300s and love it. It was actually Big Stu who told me to do it, so shout out.

I still play the 910D2 on a pro launch red. However I really think its the shaft and not the head. I had the shaft put onto a M4 and it was also really good for me whereas the stock Atmos shaft sucked.

I'm curious what you would get OP with the M2 on the old shaft. I really do think most of the "feel" is the shaft, not the head, in a driver.

I totally agree, shafts are such a huge aspect of the driver. The M2 was in a Tour AD. I've been in a version of this shaft for a long time. I think for me, its about how the head sits at address. I got the Adams professionally fitted and built by the adams tour guys when they came to my school the last year I was playing in college. So I don't exactly know what they did other than a little weight in the toe but with the Adams, I get the feeling I can go after the ball without it going left (I do not like seeing the ball draw other than VERY specific occasions haha)
