A more important question.. what does your game lack that warrants either option..?

Good question. I’m kind of a tweeter. I can work the ball a little, but also struggle with hitting my irons flush every time....especially mid to long irons. I think I would score better with a more forging iron....maybe I answered my own question!

I am going P750 but for most of the year played P770 up to the 6 iron and then P790 for the 5 iron. I think the P790's are amazing but I would not personally want them throughout the bag. I say that though not having actually played them. When I did hit the shorter irons in the P790's, I had a hard time figuring two things:

1. How I would gap them from 125 yards in

2. While they felt fine I could not really feel where I was on the club face with them

I do think they would be a fun set but they also work great as a mixed set if you bend them a little.

As for the P770, except for being a little bigger than I prefer they are awesome. They feel great and you can hit any shot you want with them. Lastly, they are VERY consistent with repeatable distances.

I totally agree with this statement..

I'll be the one to say it: Don't buy Taylormade irons.

If you don't know why this is said in every Taylormade thread, you didn't do enough homework and aren't ready to buy. If you do know why and don't care, more power to you and good luck with their QC lottery.

This is why I had a buddy with a Taylormade components account do the build of my P770's.. leaving nothing to chance.

4,5 p790

6-pw p770

You'll probably need the shop to go approx a couple degrees weak on the p790 to keep the gaps.

I play the p750's in 6-pw and the 790's in 4-5

after tinkering, i found that the loft adjustment recommendations by taylormade were pretty spot on..

had to adjust 4-7

can't be much worse than my '18 callaway x forged irons, loft & lies were all over the place and grips were wrong and too many layers

I am not a fanboy of any particular brand but I certainly think it might be a bit short sighted to disregard an entire line for any reason. I can certainly read about QC problems with most any OEM, but personally I have seen zero QC issues with 3 TM sets. Now, I don't consider lofts and lie issues, because I have them all checked and adjusted to what I need anyway and that is from any OEM. I have never even recorded where they come in at. I also have zero confidence that any OEM will get you an entire set at exactly D5. If exact specs are important to a player, IMO you have to have a good builder work on most OEM releases.

I am not that great of a player but some very good players have had a lot of success with the P700 lines this year. I think the OP is looking at two very different clubs in the P770 and P790 but they both are excellent at what they were intended to do. The P790 has an almost cult following in the golf world now LOL. The P770 is IMO one of the best irons not really talked about that much. The P750 and P730 pretty much grabbed the more elite players but for us mortals, the P770 is a tremendous iron.

This comes from a guy who before this year never owned a TM club.

  • 1 year later...

I have played the p770 for the last two seasons or more. They are quality irons and I have enjoyed playing them. They are consistent. I am looking at moving onto the either the p790 or the Cobra KingTec. I think the 790 looks slightly better, but the Cobra TEC feels better. Going to get fitted in the next month.

The 790 will help with mishits more than the 770, and I think the feel is a little softer in the 790, but there is definitely less feedback.

I think the shaft can make a huge difference for you in deciding.

I have P770s and absolutely love them. If you struggle in the long irons then I would do a combo set but the 770s are a little forgiving so I would almost do 4,5 in 790 and then 6-P in the 770s. You won’t be disappointed in the 770s

The 770s are what I would build around. Maybe 790 for a long iron or two, though the foam-filled iron feel is a little different to me. Certainly not bad but not my favorite. The 770 is a true forged iron and I like the head shape. Feels excellent and nice turf interaction.

Blended OG 790 5/6 this past year. I continue to work on my swing and ball striking, however for me the 790's forgiveness is clear over the 770 for my strike on the longer shots. The 790 is a bit clicky on mis-hits but centered they feel close to a 770 so on good days other then visually they are hard to tell the difference. On Bad days, I just end up closer to target :)

I bent the790s 2deg weak, left the 7i 770 the way it is.

Would go 760/790 combo set maybe 4-6 790 and 7-PW 760s. P790s are fantastic I just hit them too far or would have bought a set.
