Ping G Crossover - Is It Any Good?

Recommended Posts

I just bought a set of “mint” G700’s from eBay and the set starts with a 5 G Crossover. The price was so good I’m watching some G700 5 irons to replace it. Since I’ve never hit a Crossover I’m wondering if it’s something I may like, or is it like a TV-Only complete hybrid set. I realize I’ll be able to make a decision for myself when it shows, but some auctions are ending before I’ll be back next week and I thought the collective wisdom of WRX may help. Thanks.

I bought the 18* G Crossover to possibly replace my 19* G30 hybrid and I just haven’t been able to find a groove with the G Crossover. The aesthetics of the crossover appeal to me but I haven’t been able to find any consistency from both the tee box and off the deck. My G30 hybrid yields confidence (for me) from both scenarios.

I love golf

Same, I had one to try and just couldn't get used to that thing. It was a little funny of a shape to look down on and the offset was a little hard for me to get used to in a driving iron. Swapped to the MP18 FLIHI and loved it and have never looked back.

save your self the money and hassle of having to resell it later and dont buy it. I was like you and wanted to try one before i had ever had one in my hands. Purchased one for cheap and as soon as i opened the box i knew i had wasted my time. The huge offset is very bazaar to look down at for a driving iron type club. All mine wanted to do was go left and left of left. After a few shots thats all i could see when i looked down so i sold it and just bought a hybrid. I also didnt care for the sound and feel of it but that could just be me.

I may be in the minority but I just purchased the G Crossover 5 iron (24 degrees) to replace my 4 iron (23 degrees). On well stuck shots the crossover is about 10 yards on average further than a well struck 4 iron. It took me about 2 range sessions and maybe 3 rounds to find a grove with it. Was a little inconsistent at first. I think have a light graphite shaft rather than stell was an adjustment for me. But now it is a club a use a lot. Very good off the tee and useful on long or 4’s. I basically choke down slightly if I am looking for my old 4 iron distance or hit away when I need a little more. Has been a great addition to the bag so far.

It came with the G700 set I bought. That is 6-SW with a Glide wedge. Instead of the G700 5 iron the guy was using the Crossover. I'm probably going to order a G700 5 iron to complete the set, although I do have a Ben Hogan Hybrid 21* that I like. I'll compare it to the Crossover.

I have 3 & 4 crossovers with the ping tour shaft. I was never consistent with the 3. For me, the 4 has been almost as long as the 3 and much easier to hit. I use it as a 4iron replacement, next club down is either a 17 hybrid or 4/5 wood. Yes, it's huge & ugly but it does the job for me.

This just about sums them up.

I had the 3 and 4 for a while. Hit the 4 well but couldn't hit the 3 for toffee. Really strange. But I fell out of love with the look and sound. I've heard many prefer the original crossover to the newer release.

I've gone back to hybrids now (TM M1s) much more consistent left, right, front and back.

I have the 3 G crossover with steel shaft. I love it. It's my go to club on tight par 4s. I have trouble with it off the fairway on tight lies. But for me its money off the tee or in the rough and its sitting up on a fluffy lie. My brother like it so much and he went and bought the one with the Alta graphite shaft and didn't care for it. I also hated it. To me it's a much different club with the steel shaft.

I had a G crossover as I wanted to replace my hybrid with it. Long story short it was terrible. It was stupid long (really, it went too far). But... The sound the thing makes and the feel at contact are absolutely completely terrible--the worst I've ever felt or heard in my golfing life. No matter what I did I always felt I was missing the sweet spot even though I was finding the center of the face. I even had a Tour 95 shaft put in, didn't help at all. I finally sold it and got a U45-- I'm MUCH happier.

If you can get over the fugly look, awful noise, lack of feel, and comical amounts of offset, it actually performs quite well.

I play the G irons 4-UW and at one point thought a G 3-Crossover would be a fine addition to my set. Yikes! Could not get any distance, elevation or control out of it at all. Seems to require even a different type of swing or a lot more clubhead speed than I have.

So now I have an 18-degree 5-wood and replaced my G 4-iron with a 23-degree hybrid. That's been a much happier combination than when I tried a 3-wood plus 3-Crossover. A man's gotta know his limitations.

I took the G Crossover to the range today. It’s going on BST. Not a fan.
