Driver vs 3w

Recommended Posts

Went to my club to flatten some wedge lie angles ... wow what a difference ... anyways

they then tossed me on Trackman as they've had major success this summer fitting players into Rogue heads

My driver has been weak this summer due to left golfer's elbow and some low right side back issues. I was despondent to see it was around 101mph vs 109 last Fall in my Titleist fitting. Big loss but understandable. Driver is below in sig at 46.25" d7.

I was still getting drives rolling out around 280 to 286 due to good launch and 2100 spin. Smash 1.5.

Though last fall I had 270+ carry. Arghhh..

Hit some Rogue heads and got same speeds with higher flights. Sub zero version of Rogue ... way too low spin ... 1300-1500.

Got the same results with a speeder platinum 5x tipped 3" in a GBB head. Dead straight and incredibly smooth feel though

So I tell the gent my 3w is almost driver long, he doesn't believe me, so we hit it. (Twice in weekend 2 man matches I knocked it on our 18th from 245 out ... over a big pond.)

See 3w in sig. 43.5" d6. 99mph swing, 245 carry, rollouts up to 276. So my 3w swing speed has dropped 2 mph due to injury but my driver has dropped 8mph???? Very strange I feel.

Put the 3w shaft in a Rogue head. Still able to swing 101 mph FFS. That was surprising, felt like a kids club.

Trying to find a Blueboard 53x. I know I will shorten the driver to 44.75-45.25"

Any other ideas? Anyone else have a similar experience?

Shorten the driver and don't play it at d7. I'm guessing you may be a big boy but a 46.25 d7 is a bit much.

Try something around 45" at d3 or so...you may really like the results.

10 years ago I played 95g shafts in a 2007 burner TP head, was able to swing that 108 .. at 44.75

Of course that was 40 and not 50

Going shorter but will stay heavier ... all my stuff is heavier swing weights

same here.. Just got pro fitted into a 43 1/4 rogue with a rogue black 80 TX... I picked up 4 mph at this length vs 44.5.... with a 44.5 driver length My 3 wood pushed it carry wise....... and my swing speed with 3 wood was higher. I didnt play well this weekend..BUT it wasnt driver this time.. I hit the center of the face more this weekend with driver than ever before. shorter is better.. and id look harder at that Rogue... Ball speed off center is so much better than the 17M1 i came from and the M4 i tested.

I am looking hard at the Rogue, can hit it super high and with low spin. There are 4 holes at my club where it would make carrying doglegs even easier

Is 6'2" and a manther like 265 still considered big nowadays??? Who knew?

At that size you should just shaft a garbage pail lid with a tree branch. Its hard to square up but it kills spin.

The rogue is a pretty solid driver. The most important thing, IMO, is to have a head that gives you confidence. I'm not totally convinced the technology is all that different, but I'm firmly convinced what you look down at really matters. I like the titleist triangle. I'm not a massive fan of the Taylormade White/Black cookie look.

A lot of times (IMO, IMO) people hit the heads on the machines and think "oh, since this head gave these numbers its the head" when I think most of it is your reaction to the head rather than the head itself. Maybe that doesn't matter too much, but there are some heads you'll be comfortable with putting behind the ball and some you won't. I almost think its like putters - find one you can aim straight. They all pretty much go when you hit them like a 3 cap should (even older drivers). The confidence to release hell through the ball without trying to steer it is where getting the right head is super important.

Again, IMO. I'm not a fitter. But I don't understand why they don't do aim tests with full swing clubs like they do during putter fittings. I played with a ~18 cap this weekend who seriously aimed about 30* right on every shot. He swore it was square. He was playing fitted Rogue Pros. If you can't aim 'em, they stink.

So to your question, it could be a confidence issue with the driver such that you are holding back your swing. If you are confident in that regular 3 wood but not in the new driver it could easily be your subconscious throwing the brakes on and trying to steer it up the middle.

I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to support this, but moving to a head you don't aim well kills swing speed. Your body will instinctively slow down if full speed and straight puts you in the woods because you're aimed wrong. And at your speed, being aimed about 3 degrees right is about 28 yards by the time the ball lands. I have to really really police myself to pay attention to alignment until I get used to a new head.

All good points and I support your anecdotal evidence. Visuals are huge for me. The 3w is shallow and open so it is perfect for counteracting my bad visuals of a 3w I can't elevate (like any Titleist fwy head)

I can't hit wedges with offset. I struggle with irons with thick top lines and fat soles. I actually don't hate my '16m2 head but not a fan of my Gmax visually (massive footprint) and the extra spin ruins it for me. Need to try a LST head I guess. Or hotmelt the front.

The driver I like the best visually is the '16 GBB .. but the head is draw biased even w the weight way out on the toe. Compact and high head shape reminds me of the old 9015d's. Maybe toe hot melt that head???

To be clear, the '16 m2 is NOT a new driver for me and that head/shaft combo is what I was swinging 109 with last Fall

Pinestreet,

What did you think of the Norwegian kid that won the US Am by aiming right. I'd pay for that action and extension thru impact !!!!!!!!!

Talk about an impressive player. Incredible demeanor and attitude as well.

Blueboard 53x tour issue, found and ordered at a great price.

I'm copying Pinestreet !!!

Of course now my OCD side wants a 73x or 83x blueboard to go in a 5w or 7w .... even though I love my 7w as is .... i have an issue (or two)

I have a whiteboard 63x and 83s but they don't quite feel as sexy as the BB's ... YMMV of course
