Switching from MBs

pmadden86

Recommended Posts

I am looking at switching from my 716MBs to something a bit more forgiving but with a slim top line and as little shovel like as possible.

Loved the blades but only playing once every few weeks since the kids came along, I need something that I can hit better with only having small amount of time available to play.

Ideally looking something at a similar value to the 716MBs so I can straight swap, Titleist and Mizuno would be the preferred brand.

Any recommendations welcome!

Just switched from blades for the same reason. Tough for my eyes to look at anything other than a blade, the switch was a must with how little i've been playing. I tried every players CB under the sun (exception of srixon) and i would say its MP 18 SC, then JPX 900 tours and everything else. If feel is important to you, go Mizuno - nothing i hit came remotely close. They both look great too, just depends if you like chrome or satin. I went MP 18 SC 3-PW and was even still surprised at how good these look. Still very demanding to hit and workable at the same time but a little bit of help. Another classic from Mizuno.

I really wanted to love the 718 CBs because they look amazing but if you hit them side by side next to the mizunos, you will see why it's no contest. I went into the demo process expecting to get the CBs but couldn't ignore the feel and results form the MP-18. I had to throw brand recognition out the window and just go with what felt and performed better. Zero regret

I just switched from my 716MB’s as well. Started with adding in 716CB long irons and after seeing the results went ahead and swapped the whole set. I moved to P750s and have enjoyed them. Short blade length and top line looks enough like a blade, especially if you don’t have a blade sitting next to it. Feel is very good too. That said, I’ve been eying the JPX900 tours and the new JPX919 tours. I’ve loved Mizuno in the past and just didn’t like the top line of the MP18 SC. May have to give the JPX’s a test against the P750’s.

There are lots of options, Currently playing Callaway X Forged 18's. Nice feeling iron.

performance wise, very good. At least as good as the MP 5's they replaced. You will have

To spend a little time and try out irons, this is an opertunity to maybe try a combo set, more

Options for those wanting to mix and match iron sets. Good luck with your search.

I would consider Bridgestone offerings as well. I haven't owned any since the J40 CBs, but if they have kept the topline look the same, they are about as close as a blade at address as anything.

I recently switched from a 716 CB/MB combo set to the PXGs. I have also owned the Apex Pros and MP 18 SCs.

Personally, I would go CBs, Apex Pros and then MP18SC in that order. For me the Mizunos performed the worst and 'softness' was overated. 716 CB was the softest of the bunch.

I would highly recommend Bridgestone J15CB. I know not a preferred brand for you but you can get them cheap nowadays and they are the closest thing to getting the feel and performance of a blade but with a touch more forgiveness. Single-handedly stopped my iron ho'ing to the point I don't even look at new irons (unless they are J15CB that I could snag as replacements to hold onto until when mine wear out).

The Titleist 716/18 CB are really good... Everything about them is blade like except for their forgiveness... AP2 help in a MB package, also with a ground leading edge for smooth turf interaction. I am smitten with these irons....

Another one to check out may be the S55... still have a thin topline, narrow sole, but a little longer heel to toe. Great feeling irons with good forgiveness.

The Srixon 7 series are nice, too, but I think the top line is a little chunkier than most blade players would like to look at. If you can get past that, they are another solid option.

I agree that, Titleist CB, Srixon 7 series, or Mizuno 900 Tours/18 SC would be the best bet.

I have a split MB/CB combo in the 714s. I also have a full set of 712 CBs that played before switching to the MB/CBs. When the swing is on the MBs are great to attack pins. The CBs add just enough forgiveness for off center hits. I also am just a sucker for blades

If you go with the Titleist CB you're going to instantly notice the offset.

It's really hard to go from an MB to anything else. I might recommend a MP-64 if you want the blade-look in the mid- and long-irons, although unfortunately, the 64 short irons are a little fat.

Worth considering the iBlades. They’re the best looking cavity back irons at address that I’ve ever hit (which is what they really are), feel great (albeit different than your MBs likely feel), and have smaller soles that give me the turf interaction that I like (some CBs have far too wide of a sole for my liking). Obviously might not be your cup of tea, but just a thought. Came from Adams MB2s to the iblades for what it’s worth...(but I didn’t sell my MB2s just in case!).

Made me laugh. My girlfriend looks like a supermodel too, as long as......

Keep the blade look and add some forgiveness and go with some i500 or P790. Maybe go retro with J40 DPCs.

Problem with some of those choices is how far he wants to go from blades in terms of performance and look. DPC and P790 are much longer blade lengths than MBs, and the i500 and P790 would be much lower spinning clubs.

I love my 718 CB/MB combo set. The CBs have just enough added forgiveness in the longer irons.

Most of the manufacturers make good quality player CB irons these days, so you can't go wrong with most.

That said, I'd have to recommend Mizuno MP irons if you are a player. They are quality and class all the way. There are many to choose from, new and old......

I just did this. I have been gaming a mixed set of Titleist. 712U 4 iron, 714 CB 5 iron, 710 MB 6 - 9. I wanted to get a set with a bit more forgiveness to play as well so I ended up going for the Taylormade p750 in 5 - 9 keeping the 712U since i love that club. I am playing a Nike Victory Red Forged PW at 46.5*. I played my first round with them the other day and loved the feel on them, since it has been a bit over a month since i picked up my clubs, it was great to have a bit of forgiveness from them. They look great as well, not too thick top line and nice compact length.
