Best Golf Shop You've Visited

Whenever I travel around the country on vacation, I try to stop in to a local golf shop or two to see what they have. My favorite shop that I've ever been to was in Atlanta back in the mid '90s. The name of the store was Old World Golf. They had a lot of classic clubs like persimmon drivers and forged blades, but what I really liked was their huge inventory of used putters from multiple eras.

This store isn't around anymore, but I'm sure there still are plenty of unique, cool golf shops around the country to visit. I'm not talking about Golf Galaxy or Edwin Watts. Those have their advantages.

But what independent golf store or shop have you visited that is your favorite and why? I look forward to your answers.

The original Uinta Golf in Salt Lake City was an awesome shop. Carried pretty much everything, had a huge selection of used clubs before that was a big thing, a knowledgeable and fairly priced in-house club repair shop and they’d allow you to trade in stuff you won in amateur tournaments for like a 10% stocking fee. They were so good the big box stores couldn’t get a foothold in the area until the very end.

I used to love Springbrook Golf in Elma, just south of Buffalo, drove down there from Toronto before we got Golftown as they had all the latest clubs and an outdoor range - I'm talking late 80's to mid 90's. They're long gone, probably killed by big box stores and online retailers. Now my vote goes to Carls Golfland, outdoor range and all the demo clubs you'd want to hit, even full demo sets of PXG and Miura.

Being a leftie, Left Handed Golf at Silvermere is a Mecca for southpaws. It’s just a shame that one of the guys who works there manages to **** me off with his arrogance every time I go there.

I live in Arizona. However, best golf shop I have visited is Carl’s Golfland in Bloomfield Hills, MI. They have grass tees to demo clubs and even have Trackman Range so that you can determine the performance. Carl’s is first class operation.

The shop itself might not be the greatest, but combined with the “cluboratory” and being based at a nice driving range, Miles of Golf in Fairfield near Cincinnati is first rate.

The “cluboratory” has a vast selection of heads and shafts that can be demoed on the range with the assistance of very good fitters.

Even if you don’t wish to pay for a full fitting on top notch launch monitors hitting out onto the actual range and seeing your ball flight, you can still try a huge amount of new equipment on the range on your own.

The Best golf shop in Columbus Ohio is Par Golf discount in Dublin. My buddy Dan owns it. Great guy. It’s been a family run place for decades.

I believe the one in Atlanta was called Old Sport Golf, but I agree it was one of the very best golf shops it was ever my privilege to visit. I wonder what happened to all of that inventory. One almost felt like that store had at least one of everything that had ever been made.

Another great one is Roots and Relics in downtown Honolulu. Hope they make it through Hurricane Lane without too much damage.

The Haggin Oaks Superstore in Sacramento. It’s the brick and mortar arm of Morton Golf and there’s very little they don’t have, or can’t get. They’re attached to an actual driving range and they’ll give you free range balls to demo anything, or everything, in the store for as long as you want and you can check out putters to try out on the actual practice green instead of the indoor area.

Throw in a knowledgeable, friendly staff and they get all my money.

I loved going to Old Sport in Atlanta by the intersection of 285 and 85 on the northeast part of town. Many great sets of the same models I grew up with from the 60s and 70s.

Old Sport was incredible. I shudder to think about how many putters and iron sets I bought there.

3rd vote for Santa Ana Roger Dunn. One of the staff guys said, a lot of customers use their store as their free no cost driving range. What’s ironic is this superstore is in Orange County to serve the affluent residence in the area.

Pheasant Valley Country Club in Crown Point, Indiana. (About 50 miles from Chicago.) in the eighties and nineties the Pro Shop was stacked floor-to-ceiling with new and used clubs, expert advice that was friendly !, And lots of logoed apparel that was a year old. You could buy the previous year's US Open baseball hat for $5. High-end golf shirts for $20. Sadly the head pro passed away and ownership changed many times.

But luckily we have a similar type golf shop nearby called Ringo's.

Any Northwest Indiana golfwrx members out there ?

Ah, memories.....I used to work part time at the original store in the 90’s before they built that monster down the street.

When I was a club pro they wanted me there as a commissioned fitter and salesperson for evenings and weekends during the holidays.

Made pretty good money doing 20 hours a week and actually had a pretty good time doing it.

I guess that was probably the start of my equipment obsession. ; )
