Looking for new irons and have some questions....

As the title states I'm in the market for new irons. Ive been playing some Adams irons from about 10 years ago. I was fit for the G400 at a demo day and absolutely love the way they felt and the way the ball flew. I felt like I was making ball first contact which is something I have time struggling with. The next day I played a round and for the life of me could not get the same filling. I wasn't hitting down on the ball at all. My question is should I get another iron set so I can distinguish between hitting thin shots and solid shots off the face? I have been working on my swing a lot and taking lesson to fix issues I have in my swing. I guess the problem I'm having is would these irons give me "false" improvement of my swing? Does anyone who games the G400 notice the difference between thin and solid shots?

Things to note:

I was fit for Blue dot heads with a stiff shaft. Previous irons were uniflex and stand lie. I had a lot more consistent ball flight with the G400s, like I actually had a reliable shot shape.

Same as above. If you hit off a matt I would not buy based on that. I need to hit off grass to get a true picture. A range I go to has both grass and matts. I can hit them so good off the matt but usually not as well of grass. Matts are definitely easier and I feel like kind of cheating. Another thing to think about is maybe you should wait until you get you swing dialed in a little more with your lessons before purchasing a new set?

What's your handicap ? I don't keep an official one and usually shoot in the mid 80s. I find it pretty easy to groove my swing at the driving range (on grass) but some/often times not so much while playing. Suggestion - next time you go to the driving range, switch irons every swing pretending you are actually playing a hole. Better yet, while doing this take a minute or 2 between swings to simulate a round of golf. I am not familiar with the g400 irons but from what I hear they very forgiving .

I would give them more time coupled with your lessons.

25 handicap. I will try that next time I go to the range.

I woukd not dump the clubs. You are having impact issues, but it’s not true you will get better if your bad shots feel worse and end up worse. Pings may forgive, but you can tell when you hit it pure in the face, no doubt. I would keep working on the swing and use impact tape to tell you what you are hitting it. A great tool for learning. Lack of ball-first contact is a problem helped by higher bounce irons — Pings are perfect. The G400 is excellent for getting better and not unduly suffering as you do.

As one poster mentioned above, Mizuno Hot Metals are another good choice but are at the other end of the bounce spectrum. Some find they are a little diggy, though they do have a beveled leading edge and a wide-ish sole so the bounce plays a little higher than the listed amount.

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Diamana TB 60S

PXG GEN6 5 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Yamaha RMX VD 7 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Callaway Mavrik Pro hybrid (22) w/Aldila Tour Blue 85 stiff hybrid

Wilson Staff Model CB 5-G w/DG s300 shafts

Edel T grind 54 w/Nippon 125 wedge shaft

Fourteen RM-12 58 w/Dynamic Golds400

Axis1 Rose putter, 34 inches

Looks like I will stick with the G400 and work on the impact issues. I was just hoping that these wont band-aid the issue but the last thing I want is to have a false indication of my swing. Thanks for the answer.
