790 UDI shaft change options

I got fit into 790s with modus 120 x shafts after playing hogan blades for 20 years, technology is a nice change. Loved long irons so much I decided to get a udi. After going back and forth between getting a stock graphite or a modus I found one with a modus on ebay when they were out everywhere and pulled the trigger. It's working pretty well but thinking I would rather have a graphite shaft for weight and shock on arms. Looking for recommendations on what others have tried and worked well. My driver swing speed is between 110 and 115 with a really fast release at the bottom that produces high flight and spin. Current driver setup with fitting is a 917d2 with a tensei pro white tour x 70. Not opposed to putting a tensei in if it works but want to make sure before spending that much on a udi shaft.

I was fit into 790's with Modus 3 130 X flex shafts and love them. I bought the UDI when it first came out, pulled the shaft immediately and put a Tensei Pro White 90TX. It is the most reliable club off the tee for me when I need to hit fairways.

I play the Synergy Black 70TX in my driver.

I went black tie 105x straight in and already hit some career 2-irons. It is primarily a tee setup though.

I do think the best setup is a rocket launcher udi with graphite then a 3/4 iron with steel for turf play.

I have the standard HZRDS in mine (coming from a 716 T-mb with modus 120s) I find the HZRDS a little too light and struggle with two way misses. Thinking of trying the KBS Tour proto shaft in 105 s+. Anyone tried that shaft ?

I pulled the stock hzrds out and threw in a x7 tipped 1”. Its a beast but it produces an awesome ball flight.

We have a similar sounding swing and I play 130G X-Still shafts in my irons and although I don't have a 790 (I have a Srixon U65) and went with a HC HZRDUS BLK 105g 6.5 and am liking that so far.

I play AMT X100s and shafted up a UDI 2 iron (TP, not 790) with a DG 105 X100 shaft - same profile, just 10 grams lighter than the AMT in corresponding loft. Low bullets off the tee, even lower off the ground. Might be a pinch hitter for a course with no trees I think.

I really wish there was a way to test out different shafts in this guy, outside of buying shafts and pulling/gluing. I don't think this is something that most fitters will have available.

I'm actually having real great success with the stock 85g HZRDUS Black, even though I'd love to try something heavier and a bit shorter in length. Just not really worth risking when the stock shaft is performing how I want it to.

Agree with this too - I bought my head used and pulled the stock shaft and decided to put an X100 shaft because I know what to expect. Even in steel shafts I don't really want to fork out $30-40 3x over to maybe find a better shaft!

I just put a Aldila NV 105 Hybrid in my TP 3 UDI, and really like it. Flight is a bit high, but it's real straight and consistent. Get a solid 225-230 off the tee with it. The P790 2 UDI with the stock shaft is good for 245-255 off the tee, which is all I was wanting. Between the two, I no longer have to carry a hybrid (which I duck hook). I still have to get used to hitting them off the fairway/first cut though. I lose a lot of distance hitting them off the turf than off the tee.

Exact why I asked the question. It's tough to throw $100 to $200 at a shaft not knowing what it will do. It's not like it's a quick fool removal either. When I try something I will update.

I have a 790UDI with the stock HZRDUS that's great off the tee. I also have a 790 3i with a GD AD-95x (DI shaft) but I'm not thrilled with the shaft. Probably just not a good fit despite giving me some good distance. I had a KBS TGI100 in there but it was too soft. A PX HB6 - my go to - is going to go in there shortly. My 4i is a 790 with my same iron shaft and I LOVE it. It's a great club from the grass and tee.

RIP Alpha, threw one in an 2014 tour preferred CB 3 iron. Previously had an X100 and would occasionally get the hooks. RIP alpha turned the hook into mid launch bullets with a baby draw.

And you can get them dirt cheap.

Aside from the Hzrdus, has anyone bagged either the Recoil or Steelfiber options? I'm thinking the Recoil 95 could work well in particular and probably has a bit more feel than the Hzrdus although I haven't been able to try either yet!

Well I finally got to try the UDI today with Hzrdus black. It reminded me of the Matrix black tie and is not a good fit for me. I also managed to try a Srixon 2 iron with the Recoil 95 shaft and whilst that felt a little nicer, it was still surprisingly harsh compared to the Project X Blue 6.0 hybrid I am using in an old Big Bertha 1 iron.

I didn't get to swingweight the UDI but I'd be amazed if it was heavier than C8. That probably goes some way towards why the Hzrdus felt boardy

This is why I abandoned my UDI. The head weight is so low, I couldn't get a decent swing weight with it. I added tip weights and a bunch of lead tape and I got it to D0 playing at 40".

If I can figure out the weight with the UDI head, I will go back to it, but until then I will stick with my Tour Preferred UDI.
