Old School Looking Woods?

MGPT

Recommended Posts

Finally picked up some Eye 2's (3-SW) and fell in love. I also have a brass Acushnet bullseye putter that has always been good to me. I'm going to get a Jones bag as well so just need a driver and maybe a 4 wood to complete my 'vintage' bag.

The problem is that woods are the clubs that have progressed the most tech-wise over the years so getting a genuine older club would probably be too much of a disadvantage.

What are some clubs that have a vintage look or are simply considered timeless classics that I could consider? Currently thinking about the Cleveland Classic driver, the V-Steel fairways and my old love the SQ2.

Callaway Steelhead fairways are fantastic and cheap. The Plus would be my favourite if it didn't sit so closed but this can be solved with a shim or clocking ferrule. The original steelhead 4 wood with a proforce gold would be the ultimate classic players FW to me.

Driver wise the 983s and j33r are good suggestions. I would also be considering 905 or Ping G2,5,10.

The difference isn't as profound as some would have you believe, such has been my experience. I have a Ping Zing Blonde driver and 3w, have used them extensively, especially during 2016. I would not infrequently find myself in similar positions on the course with my Zing Blonde as I would with my Fast 12LS.

In the finest of small sample size traditions, my longest drive of 2016 was hit with the Zing Blonde driver.

If you want to go the old school route, Eye2 woods would be a worthy choice.

I admit to a bias. :)

I wouldn't mind finding a blonde Ping driver and 3 wood to go with my BeCu ISIs. That would make a nice vintage bag. :)

The Steelhead plus were great clubs, you should be able to pick them up with steel shafts as well.

I’m another +1 for the Eye 2 Woods, those things were incredible.

I'm s surprised that the Mizuno MP-650 hasn't been mentioned. Classic shape and look with amazing feel. The 3W titanium muted sound is addicting.

Damn, you guys have got me thinking about Persimmon!

So 2 questions:

As someone who hits a 10.5* 460cc driver about 255, what kind of distance could I expect from a persimmon river of similar loft?

And are there any particular persimmon woods to consider?

180ish.

Powerbilt Citation, OLD Macgregor, Hogan Speed Slots.

The Cleveland Classic XL driver and 3 wood would have the best balance of old school looks to modern performance. The good news is that plenty of them are still available on eBay.

Edit: Guys, wasn't there a thread a long while back where someone reshafted the Classic XL with a steel shaft & Golf Pride Victory grip?

If you're playing Eye 2s, you should get some Ping Zing blonde laminated maple woods. Nothing else will do. Here is a pic of my driver and 3w.

I’d say you might lose 15-20 yards going from a modern driver to a persimmon or laminate of similar loft. I just switched from my Cleveland Classic Custom XL 460cc 9* 44” to a Macgregor M09T persimmon driver, around 200cc with 10* loft at 43” and I’m about 15-20 yards shorter. I will add that I’ve hit a lot more fairways using the persimmon though, so distance isn’t everything.

The Ping Eye or Zing woods are great performing and slightly oversized if you are concerned about the woods being too small, although they are laminated maple, not solid persimmon heads. Laminated heads perform just as well as solid persimmon, just be aware that not all wood woods are persimmon. Wood Brothers made some oversized persimmon drivers in the 1990s that are pretty good performing woods too. I bought a Wood Bros. Kool Cat driver at the same time as my Macgregor, just in case the Mac was too small, but I actually hit the Mac better.
