Worth it to upgrade from Ping G5 to Ping G irons?

I’m sure this has been discussed in some form but I’m wondering if the upgrade is worth it in terms of feel and forgiveness?

I know I’ll get more distance due to stronger lofts. The loft Changes will actually let me add a hybrid to the top end so that’s one positive.

The G5’s have treated me well but I am curious about more modern irons.

G400s are better looking, feeling vs. Gs. Look at those instead. ;)

Take your 7 iron and hit it against the G400 7 iron/shafts in the fit cart and compare!?

The newer G irons are a COMPLETELY different animal than the G5. The change will take some adjustment since the G and G400 are hot faced stronger lofted irons when compared to the G5. If you play well with the G5 irons, there is nothing wrong with sticking with them. if you switch, you will most likely have to adjust to the distance change. I moved from G10 to G400 and I'm a club longer with the G400. They look and feel awesome and I have no regrets, but my scoring has not improved. I just hit them further.

the G10/15/20 are basically the same stick, why park the G20 down there.

Just personal preference. I soles were so wide that I tended to swing them differently. A lot of people loved the, but I demoed them for a round and didn't dig them.

I think the G20 was the G iron at its chunkiest which wasn't to everyone's liking. Part of the reason that the slimmed down G25 received such glowing reviews and broadened its appeal with better players.

The G30 and G are almost identical in performance. You can get a set of brand new G30's for $400. Dick's has them at some locations for $355 today only. I just picked them up. Reason I had been looking is that the G5 was a great club but one flaw I have is I hit the ball very high. The G5 with the CFS the shaft is a hight trajectory club. The CFS Lite is actually a TT Dynalite Gold SL which produced a very high flight. The G30 uses the CFS Distance shaft which is a mid trajectory in R Flex for Low/ Mid in S Flex. A better fit for those who hit the ball too high

As mentioned earlier, the easiest way to know is to hit your 7 iron and a newer G series 7 iron side-by-side on a monitor and see.

That said, I'd be extremely surprised if you didn't see gains in every respect with a current G series iron. Ping changed the G line significantly with the G10's, then again with the G25's, and I think now again with the G400's. In between those relatively large changes, there were tweaks, some more significant than others. None of this is a knock on the G5's; it's better engineering as time has gone by.

(I'm leaving out the G700's, which I've been using for about 5 months now because they are really sort of premium offering like the Rapture irons were, rather than what we're talking about with the G series. But they are off the charts good, no mistake about it.)

You'll need to try for yourself like others mentioned but here are my thoughts as a current G5 player 5-7.

I have compared the G & G400 against my the G5 and the only real difference for me was the distance which is likely due to the hotter faces and the different lofts.

The G 6 iron performed a lot like my 5 iron so if I changed I would likely need to make some other changes in the bag to compensate for the changes in distance gaps which i do not want to do.
