Clubs for starting over

So after playing quite a lot (and quite poorly) in my teens/early 20s and then taking almost a decade off, I’ve dusted my cheap old clubs off and started again. After doing a swing analysis at a shop, I decided to shorten my clubs by about 1/2 inch (I’m pretty short) and start over with the basics.

The clubs I currently have are old...mid 80s Wilson 1200 LTs and an off brand driver/3 wood. Though I know I need to keep improving my swing, I’m wondering if I should get some more forgiving clubs. To be honest I’m never going to play a lot. I’ll likely play 5-10 times a year and won’t get a lot of range practice, so I’m thinking I should get my basic swing down and look for some forgiving clubs. I’ve seen everything locally to some very cheap Zevo 450s and Wilson Ultras to used Adams Idea sets, used Stratas, etc.

Would it be worth getting something a little newer to start over with, or just keep plugging away for a while with the oldies I have? Can’t help but wonder if equipment has improved enough to improve my occasional game.

If it's something you want to improve at I would reccomend spending the money on newer equipment. Maybe not brand new, but definately something from the last 5 years. Dont even worry about a driver, get a 4 wood, 4/5 hybrid and 6-Wedges. Get your hands on 20+ putters and whichever you feel best about take it home. I'd advise some swing lessons too. Practice will make the biggest difference but it's likely that your old equipment wont do you any favors.

I was recently in the same boat but decided I wanted to become more invested in the sport and this is the route I went.

Ping G series something would work. Or just go buy a Wilson 'box set'.

There were a bunch of different 1200 LT variants. If they are the shiny chrome type with a metal button looking thing on the back then I agree with the others that some newer clubs may be helpful. If they are the dull looking (no chrome) model with a pretty large cavity in back then I'd just stay with them. In either case I'd look at getting lessons. When going to the range I watch people swinging away and about 90% of the folks out there are working hard at grooving bad swings! They would be better off just stopping and getting professional help so their practice is actually moving them forward. And who knows, if you start playing good you may take up the game in ernest.

if you have a terrible swing new clubs wont help one bit, maybe if you can afford it just get one lesson and then look at getting new clubs. The pro giving the lesson will also give you some good advice if you need new clubs or not.
