Your worst match play loss?

FlyingLaw1FlyingLaw1 Members Posts: 777 ✭✭
Whats the worst you've ever been beaten in match play? I had a new personal record over the weekend.... Lost 9 and 7....

Every year my home town plays another large town about an hour away in a Ryder Cup type match play. Best ball first day and individual matches the second. First round was actually almost a month ago but the Sunday round got rained out so moved to this past weekend.

Fast forward and the remnants of a tropical storm come through and drop tons of rain. I've not played much lately and always rely on warming up on the range... Well drive the 1 hour 20 minute drive only to find out the driving range is closed... no warm up.

I've never seen the course before and it is VERY tight and VERY wooded (not good for me!). Had to hack out of the woods on 5 of the first 6 holes and was 5 down standing on 7 tee. The guy I was playing against (who was a really cool guy) knew the course really well... He was one stroke better on what felt like every hole we played.

I won 10 and 8 once. That was cool.

Proud to say 8 and 6. I was level par. My opponent was 7 under. I birdied a par 5 and lost the hole. Same guy shot a course record 60.

    lost 6&5

I was even par, without a bogey. The guy I lost to was 6 under. Wasn't even mad.

Worst loss wasn't by score, but in a senior "B" flight match play event (10-15 indexes), my opponent shot 33 on the front 9 and 38 on the back and he won 4&2. After the round he shared he sandbagged his index because he was tired of being beat by sandbaggers.

    Ironic, isn't it?

A few weeks ago I played my swing coach in league play. His HC is 1, I'm around 20. I'm getting a TON of strokes.

Started thinking about our match at 6:30 AM when I checked the pairings. Really wanted to show him how well I'm doing.

He took 9.5 out of 11 points. I just stunk the place up. I think I lost 4 balls on a 9 hole round.

The following week I shoot a 42. Go figure.

Way back when we were living in England, I got matched up with one of the recent club champions in the summer Match Play comp. I was a 19ish index and he was a 2. I made the mistake of trying to match him stroke for stroke rather than play my game and let the strokes help. Just the act of trying to keep up with his drives put my game into a horrible state. The misery ended on 12 as I pushed my drive so far left, it went OB on the other side of the 8th hole. Lost 8&6 if I recall correctly.

Of course there was a Postscript. A year or so later, I went on a golf weekend in Scotland with a group that included him and one of the rounds was group versus group where the each member of the wining team got two or three pounds from one of the losing team. It worked out that my team won and he was to pay me. He made a big show of paying me while recounting the match play debacle in the pub in front of the whole group. Really ruined the evening for me (obviously, as I am still bitter nearly twenty years later!).

    My tale of woe.

I don't think about losses, but in the club championship semi-finals I beat a guy 7&6. He didn't win a hole. I made EVERYTHING that round.

in a 9 hole league -- i was playing off a 0, giving a senior 8 strokes. he was gross even through 6 holes, and i was 3 under. i was losing the match by 2 holes; he closed me out on the 7th hole of the day by getting a birdie net ace.

I lost to Bobby May (who had a great PGA duel) with Tiger) on the 13th hole of the So Cal Jr Match Play one year...I had actually qualified ahead of him but he played nuch better against me than he did in the qualifying round.
    Golfing when I can.

was 3 up on 13 with 2ft putt to go four when I three jacked the slider , lost hole , guy hits it in the trees kicks out and makes 15ft putt for birdie on 14 for hole win, then won 17 and 18, I lost 1 up , this was the semi-final of the Canadian mid-am in 2005 , last yr of match play and in my home province in front of huge crowd , we knew winner of our match would win final, still toughest loss ever for me. guy that beat me won.

We have a Ryder Cup match annually with another club and a buddy of mine got cleaned 8&7. His opponent was -8 and when asked if he wanted to play out the round, said "I've seen the back 9 before" and shut it down.

    Worst loss:

golf club match play championship: 4 up and 4 to play. Lost the 4 final holes and lost the match on the 2nd play off hole.

    Best win:

again golf club match play net championship, I play scratch and my opponent has 8 strokes.

Played the first 9 holes 4 under par and I was 6 up.

    Won at the 15th anyway.

5 and 4. Can't ever remember being beat worse than that. I tend to make a LOT of pars, even when I'm playing lousy, so it's hard to beat a guy like me too awfully bad.

I did once "take someone to Kirby" in a match. Anybody know what that reference is?

Mine is a little different. I shot a 31 on the front nine and was up 6 at the turn. I remember thinking on the 10th tee that I was playing some of my best golf ever and there was no way I could lose. Everything went horribly and I ended up losing in regulation one down on 18. Still think about that match every time I get ahead in a match.

As a kid I lost 9 & 8 in my first match play event. I only tied one hole, and I am pretty sure my opponent hit it OB that hole and tied my bogie.

7&5 loss to a cocky college kid in a local event. He was chest puffin' the whole day, chipped in for eagle, chipped in for par, and also wedged it to a foot for par from 50yds after hacking out of the woods twice.

I don't have a ton of match play experience but when I lived in NJ for a while I lost 3&2 in a club champ semifinal. That one was never really close as I was as many as five down before winning a couple holes to make it look like I tried.

I lost a fourball match 4&3 once. This was a few years ago when I was still living in SoCal and my club was preparing to play in the SCGA Team matchplay competition. Our club president had us play practice matches against each other. That's an interesting format since while playing a fourball match you are simultaneously playing a singles match against one of the other players. Makes for some interesting concession scenarios. I ended up halving my singles match that day by winning the last two holes so that took some of the sting off but we played awful basically.

    7&6 - Dog license...

Myself and my foursomes partner lost to some 20 handicap players (really nice guys) who actually played really well... They just had too many strokes on us.

The most embarrassing part was lapping up the shot of gin from a saucer afterwards.

My worst loss was definitely the time back in the early 90s in Cape Town. I was up by 4 shots with 4 holes to go. My oponent had HCP 2 and I was a 7. He won the last 4 holes and then the play off as well. I felt sick to my stomach. After he had won the first 3, it was just inevitable that he would win the last hole and the play off too. I was finished mentally.

Weirdest round of golf I’ve ever played.

    1. 1 Up (Birdie)

    2. 2 Up (Birdie)

    3. 1 Up

    4. A/S

    5. 1 Down

    6. 2 Down

    7. 3 Down

    8. 4 Down

    9. 5 Down

    10. 6 Down

    11. 7 Down

    12. 8&6

Happened a few years back, 2 birdies then couldn’t hit a ball. Lost at least 10 balls that day, didn’t touch a club for weeks. Still have no clue what happened.

I've been lucky - 3 and 2 for me is my worst in the semi-finals. Halved #16 to after being dormie on #15. I was down 5 and won #14 & #15. My opponent was running out of holes but he hung in. The real fun was he had a bag full of the latest and greatest and I was playing my "spanners" which got me thru the first 3 brackets.

Not in holes, but a terrible loss - club champs knockout final 16.

Dormie 2 up, missed 3 footer on 17 to win the game - three putt.

Centre fairway 18, to 8 feet uphill put for birdie. Old mate in the bundu with drive, second short sided in green side bunker.

Old mate holed the bunker shot for birdie, I missed the birdie putt, he won the 20th hole to take the match.

We still have a beer now and then and relive that day !

    Terrible loss.
