Who hits their XR 3 wood farther than their driver?

swing thoughts

Recommended Posts

Over the years I have tried a bunch of 3 woods: SLDR, Bio Cell, Fly-Z, F6, Ping G, 913, 915. Most of them I can carry about 230-240 with a low/mid flight for maybe 250-265 total. But for some reason the XR just explodes off of the face for me, occasionally hitting 300. I rarely hit my driver 300, usually 280 is my max with the occasional random 300 bomb. I'm getting the same distance from the XR as from the driver. I’ve tried several different shafts on it as well, and all the same.

I've heard that the conforming restrictions are less stringent on 3 wood faces than drivers, and that makes sense, but I wonder why the XR and not any of the others?

On a firm course, I can hit a low draw with my 3w that will go further than my driver. No way on a soft course. Carry difference on similar strikes is around 15-20 yds. F7 dr & LTD Black 3w @14.5.

as a lefty i hit my Xr further than my driver..... Right that is. That thing was a bigger hooker than Julia Roberts in Pretty woman. i had to try and hit a 25 yard cut to hit a five yard draw. The BB15 i have now though. oh doggy. 14 set to 16, weight forward, that thing is a rocket launcher. Playing in a Mod. Ryder cup last weekend between my club and our neighboring club, I out drove everyone on back to back holes with it, and everyone else pulled driver. it was longer than my driver by a good bit.

XR 3deep w. Tour ad TP 8x

I hit my driver 15-20 yards further as I should lol. Nonetheless it’s a great 3w! The deep model was slept on, 4* open and super flat. My dream specs! It is one of the longest heads I’ve ever played, even with my prior Kaili 80x it was crazy.

I rotate my fairways, but it is easily my favourite

I have a XR16 3wood that is really long & when hit out the screws is a high flying bomber.

However,,,,,, it is not as consistent as my XR16-Pro driver & seldom gets played, the one that has a permanent place in my bag is the 816dbd / Kiyoshi Gold 75x.

This is the best I’ve hit a 3w, mid flight, easy to shape left or right & out drives my buddies drivers regularly, all that being said, it is the only 3w that has permanently removed my RFX / Fubuki Alpha 70x.

I’d rank my top 5 Callaway 3w’s as follows

1. 816 DBD / Kiyoshi Gold 75x

2. RFX / Fubuki Alpha 70x

3. XR16 / Diamana D+ 70x

4. XR Steelhead / Fujikura Pro 73x

5. Big Bertha Diablo 13N / V2 76x

I still have them all & not buying another 3w.

Used to on the XR16. Definitely has a hot face but unfortunately the stock shaft was a whip and caused excessive launch and spin. Was also a very draw biased head with the CG more heel side. Great for hitting high draws into a green... not great at any kind of controlled fade, and really launched the ball high off the tee. Perhaps instead of the ~60g stock shaft if I could have put a 75-78g x flex in there, it could have been a keeper.

Have a Rogue SZ now and the thing is an absolute straight-ball cannon.

When I played Callaway the XR16's were so long that I only carried the 5 wood. I could hit that XR16 5 wood about 275-290 off the tee and about 250 off the deck. Only reason I ever left it was that it wasn't the most consistent FW for me. The 3w would often goes as far or too close to my driver distance.

I hit my XR Pro 3 wood within 10-15 yards as far as my Epic driver, which is why I play it on most par 4s less than 360 yards and some par 5s that I know I can't reach in two.
