Pain in first knuckle on left thumb.

Hi all, as the topic says...

It hurts from having my right palm press down on the first knuckle during the swing. I have had an x-ray done which showed nothing, and now I’m waiting to get scans done. Anybody had this happen to them?

I haven’t been able to hit balls to practice, and I just played nine holes after a month of not playing, but it’s still there. Golf is the thing that aggravates it. And the pain is more on the inside (left side) of the first knuckle joint.

Thanks.

X-Rays won't show anything unless it's a broken bone. I get some pain there, but not enough to not hit balls. I usually just stretch out my thumb a bit. I'll put my hand flat on a table (face down). Hold down the left thumb with your right hand and turn your hand counterclockwise.

But, if there's so much pain you can't hit a ball, you may have some sort of tendon/joint issue that can't be seen with an x-ray.

Sounds very similar to what happened to me last year, which was a thumb ligament sprain (Skier's thumb). Developed it from hitting on terrible mats all winter, unfortunately waited until the spring to get it diagnosed and lost a month and a half on the course. Rest was the fix for me (with a thumb splint), but the treatment depends on the severity. Pure speculation here and I'm no doctor, but given the similarities to what I experienced (no bone issues, same thing aggravating it), that'd be my guess. MRI is what showed mine. Good luck.

Yup I've got this too. Thought it was deQuervain's at first, but definitely not that tendon. It's annoying. I popped some glucosamine for a while and it did get better, but still gets aggravated every time I hit the range. I play, but don't practice anymore as a result.

While this is true and agree likely the case for the OP (tendon/ligament issue) if the x-rays didn't show anything, as a side note.

This is not true. X-rays can reveal a lot of bone and cartilage degenerative conditions in the joint. Most of which are more applicable to the older folks than the younger ones.

My scan is booked for Oct 17th. It’s a while away, but I I’m happy to wait as it’s not that urgent. Thanks to everyone for your input.

Consider wearing a thumb/wrist immobilizer while you sleep. I had to take some time off to rest earlier in the year due to tendinitis and things didn't start feeling better until I started wearing the immobilizer. My PCP stated people would be surprised to find out how active our hands are while we sleep. Hope you get it figured out!

I've had it too. I found that lengthening my follow through helped. I think it was from stopping the swing too abruptly.

It also might be from banging balls on mats too often.
