Taylor Made Balls?

I regularly play the ProV1x. So I bought the red LDPs to give a try. thinking they are the closest to the X, right? Anyway, I was hitting the reds consistently longer then the x but not by much. Was spinning them a little less then the x. Then today I run across a sleeve of Taylor Made blacks (non LDP) that my father in law had gotten for Xmas. Wow, I hit it well. Longer then the x and the Red LDP with more spin on iron shots and around the green. So... How comparable is the Black LDP to the old black?

Different balls - the 07 black is not the same as the 08 LDP black, just so that TM can confuse the heck out of all of us. In summary, the 07 Black is equivalent to the 08 LDP red in the sense that it is a ball with less spin, lower launch and more like the prov1x. The 08 LDP black is for more spin, higher launch and is equivalent to the prov1. Hope this helps...

Personally, I didn't care much for the 07 Black, felt way too hard but I am gaming the 08 LDP red now and I still got sleeves and sleeves of prov1 and prov1x just sitting there.

actually the 2007 TP Black is a ball designed to have less spin but higher launch off the driver and long/mid irons, whereas the 2007 TP Red was designed to spin more but launch lower off the driver and long/mid irons as compared to the 2007 TP Black. IOW, neither ball was a direct competitor to the ProV1/ProV1-x, in the sense that they each had characteristics of both the ProV1/ProV1-x (07 TP Black had the higher ball flight of the ProV1, but the distance and lower greenside spin of the ProV1-x, whereas the 07 TP Red had the lower ball flight of the ProV1-x, but the slightly shorter distance and higher greenside spin of the ProV1. that said, the difference between the 07 TP Red and the 07 TP Black isn't

as great as the difference between the ProV1 and the ProV1-x.

with the 2008 models, TaylorMade decided to change the characteristics of each ball to match the ProV1 and ProV1x much more closely, similar to what Bridgestone does with the B330/B330-S, and Nike with the One Black/Platinum (though the Platinum does also become the longer ball off the driver for swing speeds 115 mph and higher). of course, TaylorMade stayed with the same names for the balls to make things confusing. they should have just adopted new ball names; after all, they named the successor to the Maxfli Tour Fire something else entirely (Burner TP).
