My Full Mizuno 919 Line Review Tour, Forged & HM

Recommended Posts

I've been lucky to write something like this before: http://www.golfwrx.c...s-plus-the-bag/ So with the new 919 Mizuno lineup out its time to again delve deep into a review.

NOTE: One thing I will NEVER mention is distance in a review unless comparing to a specific club. You should and always get fit to maximize performance for you as an individual.

Let me be very frank, the 900 Line was a game changer for Mizuno! From Looks, feel and performance it was a step above ( almost confident to say a big step ) from anything they did before with the JPX Line. NOTE: this is coming from someone that rotated between MP and JPX lines for years - close to a decade. Played MP 37's, MP 64, 850 Forged, 62's 32's Etc.

Currently game MP18 blades, but the previous set were JPX 900 Tours - the reason for switching you ask - Obviously I'm a better ball striker that Brooks Koepka and wanted a full blade to maximize my 90mph club head speed with my 6 iron. Ok, so you get that I may be a bit sarcastic when it comes to my own golf game but I'm dead serious when it comes to gear. As for my game I'm what I would happily classify as a low handicap, that's plays and practices once a week.

Lets start with the Hot Metal:

919 HM looks stunning for a GI iron.

it should be noted that although it might not have appeared to be a "big winner" here on GolfWRX the 900 HM iron gained a BUNCH of market share for Mizuno and was the number 1, yes you read that right Number 1 selling iron for them in the line. For example, my dad, the "average" 16 handicap golfer picked up a full club and has continued to play his best golf ever - as a guy in his 50's with the 900 HM. Even broke 80 for the first time ever.

So onto the 919's - ONE WORD... better! IN EVERY WAY.

Sound and feel and fantastic, hot but not loud, muted but not quiet. Just plain Solid! Overall performance was what I would call just just better than the previous model. Mishits flew fantastic and looks are even better. As a guy that builds club, and owns a bending machine I will attest that these are still quite easy to bend and CUSTOM FIT! As I encourage everyone to do:

The design enhancements certainly help the overall sound quite a bit ( even though I had no problem with the 900HM ) and with a club like this custom fit for the right player, you WILL 100% hit more greens.

HM on the far right:

919 Forged

This is an important club for every aspiring golfer - forged, compact ( but not small ) and packed with tech.

The club is certainly different from the 900F. Top line is soft but still shorter heel to toe. From everything I have heard and read, its smaller, but packs a higher MOI and more forgiveness. I would say all of this is true. The finish looks great and I can see this being a perfect combo with both HM users looking for smaller short irons or tour users looking to get some extra speed in the longer clubs.

I personally love that they cut a slot to maximize the undercut and CoG but also went the extra step to cover it. Yes there is tech but its still a Mizuno product through and through. I would 100% personally shun any Irons with rubber slots in it. Call me a snob, or whatever you want but I can enjoy golf without a dumb slot filled with goo in my irons. This also comes from the fact that I have personally seen many PSi and RSi irons with failed club faces in my club building life BUT have never come across an issue with an old eye 2 or set of MP 33 blades.

I truly feel that if Mizuno was to make one set iron this would be that iron!!

919 Tours

Not much to say here that hasn't already been said so I'll get to the point:

- Thinner profile - so close to an MP iron you could call it the J(MP)X 900 Tour

- Sound and Feel better as advertised with a thinner topline.

- Still forgiving, but along the lines of an MP18 SC - just a different approach

- Anybody playing 900T's should stay the heck away from the 919's unless you are willing to open your wallet, one session with these and you will notice the difference 100%, by using the GFFHD process and re-working the inner cavity design these feel as good as my MP 18 blades no question.

- Pictures below show the sole comparison 919 on Right

Just like with other companies that I admire, Mizuno never feels like they are chasing the $$$ as much as others. I'm sure they - like everyone else wants to sell as much as possible, but there is still this organic feeling to their designs and helping golfer find the right club for them.

If you are looking for a new set, regardless of your golf game, or skill set there is a club in the 919 line for you.

If you have any questions just ask!

Nice review! I agree, there is an iron for everyone in this line. The HM will give the G400s a run for their money for sure. From what the Mizzy rep. told me, the 919T fits between the SC and MMC. Hoping to dial in the right shaft for me with the 919Ts. ;)

I would say more in between SC and MB. They look better at address than either the MMC or SC, especially from 8-P, but the 9-P is not quite as thin across the topline as the MB.

My combo set after the fli-hi was 7-8 MMC, 9-P MB. I think they fall right in the middle. They are easier than the 900T IMO. I will get more rounds in with them later this week.

Good review.

great writeup.

With my minimal use of my Tours I certainly agree here. Hit my friends 900 Tours on Saturday and wow the 919 Tours felt far nicer.

If you went 919t would you keep the 4iron in the set or go 919f for that club?

I made the “mistake” of mixing and matching iron sets in the MP18 line with MMC and SCs. I went full tours 4-9 and am excited about it. I don’t want the help in 4-5 because I’m not using them terribly much.

Good review

Personally I would just keep the Tour into the 4 iron - unless TM number proved the Forged to be a better fit. Having one odd club out in a set ( iron set ) has always felt weird to me personally. I love a great combo / split set and also use hybrids but one iron out doesn't work for me

Thanks for the review. How would you compare the 919T and 919F vs the MP-18 SC's?

The 919 Tours are very close to the 18 SC's, These are the obvious differences with finish and shape but the overall performance would be pretty neck and neck.

The one thing I HATE to review is distance - every club will fit every golfer different so with that I like to focus on the other factors like feel.

I would guess blindfolded it would be hard to tell the 18SC from the 919 Tour. The forged on the other hand especially in the longer clubs feels hotter and launches higher which in general is better for the majority of players.

So much prefer the look of the new Tours over the older model, a lot sharper at address, less rounded toe.

Will try to resist hitting them as I am very happy with all my sets of blades I have!

My opinion but for me the 919 tour was much softer and more forgiving than the 18 SC. I found the SC very clicky. If anything it may be comparable to the feel of the mp 15 or mmc.

Do the 919 tours feel better than the most 18 SC?

for me most definitely. as mentioned, softer and more forgiving. the Tour feel reminds me of my Scratch SB1, nothing like my Mp5s.

I hit all of them too and I would have to disagree with a lot of people posting here.

I felt the MP18sc felt much better then anything in the 919 line. The 919 line was soft, but it didn't quite feel Mizuno soft. It could be the infusion of boron in the forged series. Not sure. But the MP18 were the standouts to me that felt every bit Mizuno...this is someone who used to own the JPX900F and wanted to LOVE the 919F.
