(NO POLITICS) Help... Trump or Pelican or somewhere else?

Hey all-

Coming into Burbank and staying in downtown Los Angeles. I have Saturday free.

I am looking at playing Trump National or Pelican Hill. Any preferences between the two?

I can play at Pelican for $290 or Trump for $230...

Ideally would love to play a replay rate but don't know what the cost is for each course replay rate?

Any opinion or thoughts?

Many hate on Trump because it is named after a polarizing character. It is a Very tight layout and pretty difficult off the tee as it is so tight. Ocean views on all holes and no trees. I like it. Pelican has two courses but not sure if they give you a break playing both, I would say yes but give them a call.

I played Trump last winter and thought it was really boring. Views are great, quality condition, but I felt like I was playing the same hole over and over again on the front. A couple cool holes at the turn but then back to boring in my opinion. I'd go to Pelican, I think it is definitely the better golf course and you still get the great views and good conditioning.

I agree. Trump seemed just going back and forth along the hillside, with little variety to the holes. And when I've played there the conditioning wasn't very good either. I thought it a reasonable $100 course (remembering it is LA) but nowhere near worth the price they charge. I've had a few opportunities to play it for very cheap and have passed.

I also think Pelican is overpriced as are most OC courses, but at least both courses there offer a lot of variety, going up, down, and sideways across the property.

Pelican and it’s not even close IMO.

If you'll only play these two, pelican is the easy choice. Since it seems you're willing to drive quite a bit from downtown I would suggest going west to Rustic Canyon or east to Goose Creek. Both are fantastic, with Rustic being the best choice for a public between pebble and torrey.

Played Trump Los Angeles in 2006 and had fun, despite goofy design. It is really narrow and there are no bailout areas. At that time there were two fake waterfalls, on #1 and # 17. Why? The ocean is right there.

In 2009 played the two Pelican Hill courses. They are more traditional design. We needed a forecaddie as well.

Of these three courses, I pick Pelican Hill.

Don’t waste your time at Trump. Overpriced and not a great golf course. Are you sure you want to drive from DTLA down to PV or Newport Coast? Someone mentioned Indsutry Hills and that is a solid course that is somewhat closer to where you’re staying. Pelican is definitely better than Trump but you’re paying Newport Beach prices for an above average course. I live in the Southbay so I can’t give you good recommendations for courses in and N of LA. Too bad you can’t use a reciprocal for a private course like Riviera or LACC.

this jogged my mind to pose a ? to the original poster: are you a member of a club back home? if so, have you tried joining thousandgreens.com for some hosted reciprocity? or do you have clubcorp travel by chance or palmer premier etc? if so you may have some very good options closer to DTLA.

No way I would play Talega.. not even in the same realm as Pelican or Trump.

I'd go Pelican - South has more views of the ocean and is closer to it, but it shorter and I'd argue that the North is the better course of the two. Trump is cool if you're looking for nice scenery, the course is so-so, but again, Talega is terrible - they've let the conditions go in a bad way, in good conditions, I agree with those suggesting it.

Pelican and Trump have insanely nice amenities.. Pelican also gets the nod there too.

Pelican and trump are not good courses. They are great locations but overpriced and disappointing unless tou don’t care about the course and just want ocean views. As for a better golf course I’d look into industry hills, arroyo trabuco is its in good condition, rustic canyon, goose creek, Robinson Ranch. All better options just a matter of how far you want to drive.

> wow. no need to make a fool of yourself on here. you may not like him, but you gotta respect the office.

The Office of the President doesn't run the course. The Office didn't put up a giant portrait of DJT in the entry and the fake Time magazine cover on the wall by the pro shop. The Office hasn't touted the course as better than anything in California including Pebble. The Office didn't build the bizarre waterfalls that are totally out of place. The Office didn't sue the local school district claiming the part of land they were leasing was worth much more while simultaneously claiming to the state it was worth far less to reduce taxes. The Office isn't delinquent paying the property tax for the property. The Office didn't plant tall ficus trees which blocked resident's views of the ocean (and which they paid dearly for) because he didn't want those home seen from his property. The Office didn't violate zoning and construction permits and then sue the city to tie up the issues, costing significant public monies that would have been better spent. And the Office didn't short-pay various contractors involved in the construction. No, DJT did all of these.

Respect the Office all you want but it has absolutely nothing to do with the golf courses other than the person currently holding the position is making money from it. There is much to dislike about the course, and its owner was a pig long before running for the office. I'd say sr129 is spot on.

I know this is an old thread but recently I was fortunate to play Pelican Hills (both courses) and they were in beautiful condition. Alittle on the pricey side but if you like playing top courses i thought it was well worth it, I'm not sure if I would go again mainly because the drive from LA was loooong, lol.
