I planned on playing as many holes as possible, playing alone, in a cart, on a very wet, empty course. As I am putting my tee into the ground on the first tee, an older gentleman pulls up in a cart and asks to join me. He tells me he’s from out of state and our pro used to be the pro at his club years ago. I smile, and tell him he may join me, but honestly, I wanted to play as many holes as possible. I will admit that I am a bit of a golfing snob. I don’t want to play with anyone who can’t break 80. I learned that this gentleman is 71-years old, very fit, and has played a lot of softball in his lifetime. He’s small but has Popeye forearms. I am playing the blue tees, but offer to move up to the white tees if he’d prefer. He tells me he’s okay, he’ll try to keep up. Keep up? He carried his first drive about 245 and hit a hybrid into the first green (427-yard hole), he 2-putts for par and we’re off and running. I am getting to know this guy quickly. He can play and is great company. After 4-holes, I am even par and he is 1-under. Sure, I am hitting it a little longer than he is (only about 5-yards longer off of the tee and about a club longer with the irons) but he is very very consistent. We wind up playing eleven holes together and I was 1-over par while he was 1-under par. As I’m heading to the locker room, our pro stops me and asks if I played with Sam. After acknowledging that I did, he tells me “I told him to catch you because I knew you’d enjoy playing with him. He’s scratch now and used to be one of New Hampshire’s top amateurs in his prime. He’s also in the slow pitch softball Hall of Fame.” You never can tell. 71-years old and still playing to scratch. You cannot judge a book by the age of its cover.

I may be of the minority, but I enjoy playing with new people. I'm far from intimidating, I tend to shoot in the 80's more these days than I do the 70's. and as a sales professional I enjoy good conversation I typically play with the same weekly group, however on occasion either during a business trip or a slow afternoon I will sneak out as a single and have been fortunate to play with some wonderful people. A few years back I was paired with a high school gentlemen who was going to College in the fall to playD1 golf on a partial scholarship. His game was impressive, but I was equally impressed by his maturity and conversation ability. He will intern at my company headquarters next summer for the second year in a row. I played with a older Gentlemen in August that was 24 years my senior and played from the back tees with the group and broke 80 hitting every fairway This gentlemen was a Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam and retied after serving our country for over 20 yrs. He is a security guard at a junior high school and will retire after this school year and will be relocating to AZ to be closer to his grandson and great grandson and to play more golf. His grandson was in the same Jr. High school when this gentlemen started at the school as a security guard. Golf is such a great game and it brings so many people together that may otherwise never have the opportunity.

Who did he play softball for?

Played golf day before yesterday, with my wife, 46th Anniversary, a day I'll not forget. Shot my age, 73, from middle tees, and wife close behind at 79. Still thinking about it

I used to play with a lot of random older retired people when I used to work a lot of evenings and had time during weekday mornings.

Got paired with a 100 year old woman and her cousin once. Obviously she didn't put up any scores and hit the ball 30-50y at a time but just to be out playing golf at that age was inspiring.

She told me "I'm turning 101 next week, don't tell anyone"
