In an interview with Karen Crouse of the NYT...

"The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” Reed said. “I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me as long as it works and it sets up the team for success. He and I know how to make each other better. We know how to get the job done.”

"I was looking at (Jordan) like I was about to light the room up like Phil in ’14,” Reed said. He added, “Every day, I saw ‘Leave your egos at the door. They (the Europeans) do that better than us." Reed was also unhappy that Furyk sat him out for two sessions. "For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,” Reed said."

He threw Spieth under the bus multiple times earlier this year. Good partner doesn't do that. I don't blame Spieth for wanting to get away from him. He earned the bench with his horrible ballstriking in the fourballs matches.

We need to hear Spieth’s side of the story. However, I do agree with Reed about playing more because he lives for this moment similar to Poulter.

Furyk was a bad captain with questionable pairings and that is undeniable given the results. Yes, players have to play, but captains have to captain too. This was a complete failure on all accounts.

GD parsed together their article differently than the actual article they decided to use to get clicks. Here it is as laid out from the NYT:

Overview stuff about the day and Europe's teaminess...

The fellowship that the American team sought to create by papering its team room with inspirational sayings like “Leave your egos at the door” didn’t take this time. And at the Americans’ losing news conference, the fissure that had existed all along nearly broke wide open.

The last question in the glum post-mortem was directed at Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. They were asked about not being paired despite compiling a 4-1-2 record together in two previous Cups.

Like Molinari and Fleetwood, Spieth and Reed sat on opposite ends of the dais, but there was no frivolity — and certainly no blowing of kisses. Their eyes met, and Spieth read something in Reed’s expression that prompted him to jump on the answer.

“We were totally involved in every decision that was made,” Spieth said, adding, “Jim allowed it to be a player-friendly environment.”

Reed was seated at the far end of the table, directly next to Woods, with whom he had been paired in two lopsided losses against Fleetwood and Molinari. Reed, who rebounded to win his singles match against Tyrrell Hatton, 3 and 2, exchanged veiled looks and breath mints with Woods during the news conference. As Spieth spoke, he stared ahead, sucking on the mints.

Furyk said the decision to split Spieth and Reed had been his call. As Reed silently seethed, the news conference ended. In a telephone interview less than an hour later, Reed expressed his frustrations with how the pairings were handled.

He said he had conveyed to Furyk his desire to be paired with Spieth, who is not a good friend but with whom he has a chemistry that is hard to pinpoint, much less replicate. Spieth was his first choice, Reed said. His second choice, he said, was Woods, whom he said he loved.

But Reed fully expected to be paired with Spieth, and he felt blindsided, he said, when Furyk decided to pair Spieth with Justin Thomas, who starred with Rickie Fowler in last year’s Presidents Cup.

Spieth and Thomas have known each other since childhood and are great friends, but Reed didn’t see why that should have been a factor in splitting up two winning pairings (Spieth/Reed and Thomas/Fowler). Reed described the decision-making process as “a buddy system” that ignores the input of all but a few select players.

“The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” Reed said, adding, “I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me as long as it works and it sets up the team for success. He and I know how to make each other better. We know how to get the job done.”

Spieth and Thomas went 3-1 as a team (their lone loss was by 5 and 4 to Molinari and Fleetwood). Fowler went 1-2 while playing with Dustin Johnson, the world No. 1.

Reed and Woods lost their first match against Fleetwood and Molinari, after which, Reed said, Woods apologized for letting him down. He said he told him, “We win together as a team and we lose together as a team.”

Reed expected Furyk to tweak the pairings after the first session. “I thought he might go back with the groups that have worked in the past,” he said, noting that Europe’s captain, Thomas Bjorn, sent McIlroy back out with Ian Poulter in the afternoon after he lost in the morning while paired with Thorbjorn Olesen.

Instead, Reed was benched in the afternoon, as was Woods. The next morning, Reed again played again with Woods, and again they lost to Molinari and Fleetwood as Reed dumped multiple balls in the water hazards. Reed didn’t play the second afternoon session.

“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,” Reed said.

Reed, who earned the nickname Captain America for his fiery play in the 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cups, was the ninth match off the first tee in Sunday’s singles session. Unless the United States staged a furious comeback, the outcome was not going to rest on his shoulders. He played well, giving himself a birdie putt on every hole on the front nine. But it didn’t matter. Europe had secured the victory by the time he finished Hatton off.

When Reed and Spieth were asked about their split-up in the interview room, “I was looking at him like I was about to light the room up like Phil in ’14,” Reed said.

Reed thought of all the inspirational sayings he had read in the team room. “Every day, I saw ‘Leave your egos at the door,’” Reed said. Referring to the Europeans, he added, “They do that better than us.”

Reed is a tough guy to like, but just as what Phil said at Gleneagles was something that put his captain under the bus, Reed and Phil were both right. At least Reed waited until after the press conference was over to say it.

Reed poisoned the well in the first place with negative public comments about Spieth earlier in the year. Why did he do this? I have no idea. A good partner would never do that. The stuff about the free drop was a real low blow. The crap about "carrying" Spieth in past matches might have been intended as a joke, but maybe he didn't give Spieth enough credit for motivating him. The losses with Woods are a little bit of humble pie for Reed.

Will be interesting if Jordan and Reed ever play together after his comments. That's not good for the US Ryder Cup team moving forward. Hey, Rory and Graeme can sue each other and still win, so maybe this isn't a huge deal. I earlier said that Reed and Spieth don't have to be great friends to play together, but I don't think Jordan feels that way.

    Reed was wrong.

Spieth and Thomas were a great team and a natural team and will be a force in the future.

Reed made his own bed with Spieth (who as I recall pretty much did him a favor by bailing him out and volunteering to play with him in the first place, so classy move Jordan).

Reed has been playing like crap and did at the Ryder Cup. His exceptionally bad play can't be blamed on getting to play with Tiger and not his first choice, lol (where was he supposed to leave his ego again?).

He needs to reflect and hopefully will see things a little more responsibly in the coming months.

Now the press gets to make up all sorts of stuff because of Reed's comments.

Reed isn't Mr. Ryder Cup this year and what's past just didn't count at all when teeing it up, which it really never does.

They don't have to be friends, but there needs to be respect. Reed's comments earlier in the year make it sound like he doesn't respect Spieth.

That's it. I'm sure Monty and Faldo were a bit *****ly back in the day.

Reed was quite awful on Saturday, but surely with him and JT you can have the foundations of two 5 match guys who definitely want to be there and play, if we're going to run with the 1/2 team doesn't care narrative. Reed is obviously not polished and gets his back up easily when he sees the Bakers Bay gang (or wherever that place is) get cliquey in his mind.

What? We should be giving thanks for his play the first two days, which is where we all know we fall short in general.

Nobody carried Spieth at this Ryder Cup, he did his share the first couple of days, more so than Reed or just about anyone else on the team, lol.

Wow! I'm outta the loop on some of this stuff. Quick google and I see the neck signing - that's um, different.

Agreed it would be nice for them to be adults. Reed admits he was stupid and apologize, Spieth admit he's being overly stroppy - tell media when asked, hey we sorted it out, go play golf.

This is what happens when you have a guy like Furyk who is still on the Tour and friendly with all these guys making tough decisions. Reed and Spieth might have lost their mojo and they could have lost anyway but we will never know.

I don't always agree with Reed, but in this case, I do, it was a bad move by Furyk to split 2 successful pairings because Speith didn't want to play with Reed. If Spieth and JT want to play golf together let them do it on their day off not when they are representing our country. I lost a bit of respect for Spieth because he didn't put the team first.

He could have a point, but you don't go sharing it with the media directly after the event.

He and his wife seem to have this delusional, entitled attitude that they can do no wrong and it's always someone else's fault.

Why are people buying into this crap?

So Jordan and Reed weren't a team? Big deal. They weren't teeing it up 2 and 4 years ago, they were teeing it up this year and had no business being a team.

Now Furyk supposed to be Hal Sutton? Yep, everyone would be singing his praises for that move.

Come on now folks, you are all smarter than that.

Reed didn't get his pick to partner up at recess, so what. Seems like the only problem is him. The rest, who says the other guys didn't want to play together? Things change, we are supposed to change with them, whole point of that "new system" everyone thought was so great two years ago, when remember - we won.

This time we didn't. The world will sleep just fine!

I don't like the fact he started all of this mess in the first place. Why did he voluntarily throw Spieth under the bus multiple times about 6 months ago? First it was the "tired of carrying him on my back" comment in a press conference. Then it was the nonsense with the rules official on the golf course, begging for a free drop and making that sarcastic comment that Spieth would have been granted the drop.

The JT-Spieth partnership was strong. Could America have got more points by keeping the Fowler-JT pairing from the President's cup and keep Reed and Spieth together? We can never know for sure, but if Reed's play on the first two days is anything to go by, I doubt it.

Oddly, Reed appears to have played pretty well in the singles. He got 4 birdies (don't know if they include any unlikely gimmies), and Hatton only won 2 holes, both with birdies. So it's possible that the pair up with Tiger didn't work for him, even though Tiger was his second choice after Spieth.

And even though I think it may have not been best for Tiger (on Furyk for letting Reed even play on Friday, he should have been benched), I think some Tiger fans are venting just a little because Reed may have hurt their guy, and I think he did. Still not Spieth's "fault" - nobody to blame but Patrick for this little media mess.
