Such a better ball than the ProV1x and even the ProV1, and it is not really close for me at least. I am going to have to buy a few more dozen with the sale going on.

No worries. As long as you don’t accidentally quote a Rule of Golf in a brief instead of legal precedent.

I've never been so disappointed with a TM golfball as per the current TP5-X. And i've been a sole Taylormade golf-ball user since they re-launched in the premium market in 2006.

TP Reds, LDP's etc all seemed primarily (For me) to be plenty long enough, to spin well from 40 yards in [And living right by the sea] never balloon. Some versions were a little more hardy in reference the cover shearing, some felt a little softer. Perhaps. But more than anything they flat out performed.

The 2018 TP5-X is the complete opposite. Goes well off the long clubs. And that's it. Feels rank on less than a half-shots, very-very average around the greens. Clicky as heck off the putter. And doesn't even resist scuffing that well to boot !

I've 'just' changed / started trying other balls. But am so ready to go back to a TM offering if they change and improve. Not just change for change sake.

It's kind of annoying that these ball manufacturers make different color balls that thye don't sell in US.

I did a ball test at my local PGA Superstore a few weeks ago inspired by those Rick Shiels ball test videos. I hit balls with full 54 deg, 7i and driver and compared spin/ball speed etc. The 4 balls were:

    TP5X

    Prov1X

    Chrome Soft Truvis

    Srixon Z-star

What I found was that the TP5X and ProV1X were in a different league compared to the other 2 balls when it comes to lower spin/higher ball speed off the driver and higher spin off the wedges/irons. They were both about 3-4 mph faster off the driver consistently with lower spin than Chrome Soft and Z Star. The Z Star came in last for me as it spun higher off the driver and lower off the wedge/7i. Of course as always, YMMV. For reference, my swingspeed averages 110 with the driver.

I didn't test them all head to head on short game shots/putting but I am gaming the ProV1X and TP5X and alternating. My take is the ProV feel very slightly softer on putts and shots around the green but I don't find the TP5X to be too clicky - or it just doesn't bother me as the results have been quite good so far.

I do not find the TP5x clicky at all off a putter with an insert. Not sure about a milled face putter.

I find the current Project A to be a better all round ball to either of these. Don't think I could justify any extra $20 for a dozen from the testing I have done.

That’s why not everyone should play the same ball. Some just play better with something else.

For me, though, I found the TP5X held its line better in the air than the ProV1x. That means more greens hit for me.

    question on these 2 comments

hold the line - what does that mean exactly

    - tp5x better in the wind?

    - tp5x less sidespin and hence less dispersion on whatever action you put on it?

    thanks

    very interested in this

    appreciated

Both are correct, for me. The TP5x is a high flyer, but on windy days I have seen it less effected by wind. When I put a bad shot on the ball it makes my miss less pronounced than it would be with other balls I have played.

The X for me is the human X in that I shouldn’t be playing an X based on swing speed, but it clicks on the performance and feel buttons for me as a player. Otherwise, I would be playing a standard ProV1 which seems to the the closest performer for my game.

Well I dont and that would be a fairly devious way of reintroducing a ball.

I truly hope Taylor Made doesn't mess too much with the TP5X as its a great ball. If they do mess it up I'll load up on the current model. That's one good thing TM does that Titleist doesn't is put their prior models on sale.
Titleist does mark down the prior model Pro-V1 line when they release a new version. They sell the prior version for $39.99

Here in Australia ProVs are slightly marked down at the end of a product cycle, but are still higher than other OEMs full price. They can get away with it cause they sell so fast they never have big backlogs of stock.

I'll be happy to see a new tp5. It will give me a chance to stock up on current model, which is the ball Id play if they were all free.
