Question on Modus 105 vs 120 trajectory

Recommended Posts

I have read most of the posts on the two shafts and many people say that the 120 launches higher than the 105. Then I came across this article on plugged in golf

“In terms of ball flight, the Tour 105 performs exactly as billed. It launches the ball noticeably higher than the Tour 120, but the flight is still penetrating and controlled. For players that need more help holding greens or simply want to get more air under the ball, the Tour 105 is worth a look.

Is this just a characteristic of the users swing or is the 105 designed to be higher launching ?

Does the stiff tip in the 120 result in a lower flight?

I have the 105s in my i200’s but trying to decide between the two shafts to order in some 785’s. I would like to raise my ball flight some.

Thanks

If you look at the actual stiffness profiles, the two have very similar butt and mid section stiffnesses but the 105 has a much softer tip section than the 120. That means, in theory (e.g. if a robot makes the same swing with the two shafts), the 105 is designed to be a higher launching shaft.

However, in reality it's really going to depend on the players swing characteristics AND just as importantly, how a particular player responds to the different feels - both the differences in weight and any difference in the feel of the shafts loading due to the different tip stiffnesses. Such responses are very subjective and not very predictable. So the only way to determine what might happen for any particular individual is to demo the two shafts (in the same head) side-by-side.

I can tell you from two years of experience going back and forth between these shafts that for me the 120s are half a club to a full club shorter, but are probably more accurate for me. I prefer the feel of the 105, but I had my best ball striking days under tournament pressure with the 120s. The 120s launched higher and flew shorter for me. I think the 120s feel firmer in the tip, but I don't feel like I lose control of the 105s. Like Mr G said above, your experience may be completely different though.

I've owned both 120x and 105x. Currently play 105x. The 105x launch and peak out lower than the 120x for me. I think with these two shafts, it's an individual thing.

From that chart

Are the 120’s supposed to be flighted? lower short irons & higher long?

I chuckle in a good way at everybody’s individual results.

My personal result is agreeable with your quotation however, the Modus 120 which is 114 grams in weight was better suited for my swing.

I found the 105 was too light for my swing which meant not finding the sweet spot all the time.

Lastly from my experience, the lighter shafts; I tend to launch the ball higher with more spin resulting in lost yardage.

105’s send the ball in to orbit. Getting rid of mine. It’s comical how high launch they are.

The 120’s are perfect for my Mizuno S18 Gap and Sand wedges for any shot and trajectory. I feel they are smooth and very stable and consistent. Actually love them so much been toying with the idea of getting them in my 7-8-9-PW as well. For sure keeping the 130’s in my 3-4-5-6 irons. Smooth high towering flight. Not as high as the 105 I demod. Those are really not my flavor but could be a nice option for someone looking for a smooth easy lighter shaft with a smooth swing.

The 120 is just a really unique shaft. Really soft in the butt end so depending on your transition its really going to change what you see from it.

Some love it, some hate it.

I know fitters seem to really like what they see from them.

I played a set of 120Rs for a few seasons. May have to dust them off. Smoooothe shaft.

I can tell you from very recent experience with both in the same set of irons that the 120's didn't work for me. As a few before me said, the 120's were shorter by a club than what I had prior, or with the same iron and the 105's. 120's felt mushy to me and were spinny, the 105's kept the Nippon smoothness but were crisper, and produced a lower ball flight for me. From what I have read on this site, the 120's either work for you or you really don't like them. My previous set had 1050GH's and the 105's feel more akin to those.

The Recoi 110 & Modus 120 play very much the same.

The Modus 105 has to have a thicker wall in the tip area, hence the feel & different launch. It all depends on how you load the shaft IMO

I game the 105 in my 4i and 120 in 5-PW and for me the 120 actually seems to launch higher. That’s why I just sold my 4i on bst so I can get a new one with the 120s. But everyone’s swing is different

I agree, the 120’s launch to high for me where as the 105’s has a more penetrating trajectory. So for me on the 120’s I fall on the higher trajectory based on the Nippon chart.

Well reality has set in with the 105's. I had two hour plus practice sessions in 4 days. Love them in 6-4 irons but not anything else. My problem not the shafts. I was going to grab a set of 120's when the pain arrived late yesterday in the left wrist. Never had that before.

The trial is over. Back to the recoil 95 F4's and my srixons. The Mizuno's are going back thanks to Cally's playability clause.
