Titleist D4 vs D3/TS3

I put a Titleist 915 D4 in play this morning at Torrey Pines. Stuck a Project X LZ (the handcrafted one) 6.5 in it, and was hitting frozen ropes.

The guy I was playing with kept calling them stingers.

Basically this combination is too stiff/ low spin for me, but I was sick of losing tee shots with my 910 D2 and ADBB6s combo Ive been using for years.

I was recently fit into a TS3, but didn't want to cough up the $500 plus shaft, so I built the above combo off of ebay for cheap.

Im told the D4 is basically unplayable due to how unforgiving it is, but the misses just seem to drop out of the air and lose yardage, not spin wildly left or right.

I hit all 7 fairways on the back 9, pretty big dispersion from longest to shortest really- but everything was in the short grass.

Is there a more forgiving option that will help bring my driver spin down from the D2 but maybe not as difficult as the D4?

Are spin and forgiveness inversely proportionate?

All of these newer drivers keep touting lower and lower spin numbers- which helps maximize distance (im told).

Would a D3, one of the models add some spin and forgiveness for me?

Do the TS models really blow everything else titleist made out of the water?

Try 6.0 instead may give you a little more room.

I lofted up my 915 d3 today, and the dispersion was tight as could be. Extra loft really launched the ball, and then it cruised.

Note- not a high speed player - extra loft was probably overdue - but maybe it could work in your combo.

Maybe try fine-tuning if you have access to a few different shafts and a track man. I ordered my d4 with a Rogue 70 silver and it came with a Rogue 70 black.

I tried the shaft and really liked it with the D4 head. I have always used whiteboard style shafts but have just had my best driving year in a while with a shaft that I would have never contemplated being fitted for.

The 10.5 D4 is definitely more forgiving than my previous 3 drivers (FT tour, SLDR & R15 430)

I have a 915d4 I don't find it unforgiving at all. Its not an ultra low spin head IMO, great head shape and awful sound and feel. Defenately the worst titleist I've played. I would try adding loft first before switching shafts. I played that head with a diamana b 60x. Even hotmelt im the head didnt calm down that awful tinny sound. I gave me no better numbers and performance than my 905r.

What shaft are you using? I'm a slowish player too but like my newly acquired 915D3 enough to look into different shafts

Stock regular flex diamana mft blue.

There's more exotic stuff out there, but I love it - very easy to handle.

M1 440 can be found at a decent price and I think it fits what you are asking for. There has been many threads on it. Maybe it’s something worth a search in the forums and read some of the discussion.
