M85’s with Tourny C shaft. Wow!

Recommended Posts

So, I have a thing for blonde woods and I found a pair of M85 fairway woods, a 3 and 4, and since they were finished blonde I had to snatch them up.

Well, these mid 50’s beauties have the Tourney C shaft in them and my goodness are they incredible. Just launchers. Now I’d love to find a deep faced driver with this same shaft. What do you guys recommend?

And please check this out too. :)

Are you trying to acquire a driver to match your fairway clubs or a C shaft with any head?

CHARLEY PENNA

If I could find a deep face driver with a Super Eye-o-matic and that shaft to match with the woods, that would be great. But I would be happy with just the shaft.

I do have a Pro-Pel 1 shaft that I thought might be similar as it was the next generation of Mac shafts from what I gather from the Kaplan book.

Here you go. I'm guessing they were originally black and were stripped and then stained a golden color.

These things were absolutely launching the ball for me. I really want to find a deep faced driver with the Tourney C shaft to pair with these two.

My M-85 2 and 3 woods are original as far as I can tell and they are black. The 3 wood has a shaft band identifying it as a X-100 but I do not believe it because I can hit it with no problem. Darn if I know what the 2 wood is but I can hit it ok too.

The 1950 Macgregor catalog has the Tourney C shaft the stiffest model available except for the B shaft which was custom order only. From the catalog, “A medium stiff pattern preferred by the vast majority of tournament golfer today. This shaft is uniformly tapered to maintain rigidity in the upper shaft portion with plenty of ‘kick’ at the tip”.

The Pro-Pel 1 was the stiffest of the Pro-Pel shafts, getting softer in flex as the numbers go up.

I haven’t tried them side by side, but I do have a Pro Pel 1 shafted 1961 Tourney driver, maybe I need to throw it in the bag today and see how it performs at the range.

Thank you. So if C is the stiffest (except for the custom B), what is used to denote a softer shaft? Does it go to down to D, or back up to an A?

With the ProPel, it's easy, because the higher the number, the softer the flex, but flexes shown by a letter generally confuse me. For example, I've been looking at some PowerBilt ProSonics with "C" flex shafts, and have no idea what that denotes.

*In the end, I bought something else...and I'm looking forward to getting some information on my purchase from the folk on this forum when it arrives.

I have the Powerbilt book so I can see if I can find more about the ProSonics with “C” flex shafts.

As for the Macgregors, the shafts continue with D, E, F, etc, and get softer in flex. Here is the 1950 Macgregor catalog page with the flex descriptions.

Sorry, I meant Citations. The ProSonics I was looking at had a graphite shaft, and when I e-mailed the seller he said they were an R-flex. He also gave me some other information that was completely contradictory to the pictures on the listing (he claimed there were 4 woods for sale as well, when the only clubs shown were irons). He also said the clubs were Wilson, when he pictures clearly showed PowerBilts, so based off that I decided to avoid that particular seller.

The Citations have a "C" flex shaft, which the seller says is stiff. If you do find the information, it will be useful for future reference, but I won't be going for the Citations as I ended up buying something very different.

To C or not to see, I saw I have one. It's the M85 with the original finish and grip that cleaned up very well. The C shaft M85 was nicked up pretty much on the sole plate but was 95% with that original finish so I had it re-coated and touched up. The one with the most solid looking face and 70's shaft has been played 1/2 dozen times while the super u-shape one also has the original grip and shaft and was lightly refinished.

It only gets better pure Mizuno power too. Only s/p gap wedge I've ever seen from the rare MP29 Masters Tournament Mizuno set. I have 2 sets of clubs in my car I play MP100 and MP15. I don't hit anything much better than the 15's.

I was eyeing a Mizuno Master's set recently, though I passed up on it in the end for some much cheaper MS-1s.

Nice wooden racket in there as well, by the way!

Tstephen-

Whats with the LH set?

18 years ago I started playing lefty and actually got down to a 3 for a few years before my right knee finally blew out. I have had knee problems since a bad injury at 15. My best lefty play was up to 2008. I was almost Sir Charles for several years when my knee kept getting worse. From 2002-2008 I played lots of rounds with both sets on a cart and some with a mixed set playing an alternate ball round. Fred(Mr Wood Bros) and most of my friends like my lefty swing to righty although I've gone from a 235 carry down to 185 now that I can swing again with my very successful knee replacement.
