Review - Rogue SZ vs. Srixon Z785 - Hzrdus Black

Hello. I've made several posts on this board but not quite in review form. This wasn't quite a fitting, but just a session of me trying both Drivers with only 1 shaft. Let me give you a small background of my game:

- I've played Golf for quite awhile (I'm 31 years old), but only really started getting into the technical side of things since I signed up on this forum a few years ago. My son was born 2 years ago and it's been difficult to get out nearly as much as I would like

- Handicap: Unknown (I typically shoot low-mid 80s - best round is 78)

- Driver SS: 115 - 120 -- Best part of my game - I game a Callaway X460 Tour 8.5* with Aldila NV65 Stiff (2006 model)

- Iron play is not great + short game needs work

I made my way to the PGA SS in my area and proceeded to the 'fitting' booth (free) just to try the 2 Drivers head to head. I was very anxious to try the Z785 because I've read great things about it. I hit the Rogue Sub Zero (12g weight back) a few days ago with the Project X Even Flow Blue 65X and liked it a lot.

I tried the Srixon 9.5* head and the Rogue 9* head. I adjusted the Rogue to 8* and ended up switching the weights midway through with the 12g in the front, but made no adjustments with the Srixon.

1st impressions

Srixon Z785 - It felt great. It has a soft, explosive feeling at impact when you hit it well. I really enjoyed the feel off the face. The closest Driver in recent memory to compare in terms of feel is the Cobra King LTD Pro. I'll be honest and say I didn't really notice the sound at all for whatever reason. It was paired with the HZRDUS Black 6.5 @ 75g and the swing weight combo felt awesome. I wasn't too sure if I was going to like the heavier (compared to mine) shaft, but it felt awesome. The head felt a bit lighter than my setup (D4) and I really enjoyed swinging it.

Look: I loved the look of this Driver. The head size is smaller than most others I've seen and is a really nice shape. Love the black/CF combo, looks really nice.

Sub Zero - Another driver that feels great off the face. Not quite as soft as the Srixon, but it doesn't feel hard either. Because of the slightly harder feel (but not actually hard), it didn't have quite the same explosive feel as the Z85. Again, no review on sound because I wasn't paying attention to it. All I know is my old Cally driver is MUCH louder than both. I hit this paired with the HZRDUS Black but the 62g 6.5. This gave the head a heavier feel. Honestly, I think I preferred the feel of the 75g, but I still hit the Sub well.

Look: I liked the look of the Sub Zero, just not as much as the Srixon. The head seems larger overall and the shape is a bit more bloated IMO. Still looks good, just not quite as good. Remember, I'm coming from a squashed head 460 which is much smaller than the newer models.

Observations

Z785 - Keep in mind I did not adjust the Srixon at all. Ball speed was good with the Srixon. I averaged ~166-170 ball speed with the Srixon (highest 171). Mishits were not horribly penalizing, which was nice. What I did notice about the Srixon is that the ball flight was relatively high and the spin was as well. A few of my shots that I didn't feel were gross mishits, spun up around 3500 RPM, which ended up carrying ~15 yards less than my good strikes. I couldn't get the Srixon below 2000 RPM on all but 1 strike. It was typically above 2500 most of the time. I was a bit disappointed in this because it felt so great off the face. Again, I only hit it with the Hzrdus Black.

Sub Zero - Ball speed was better with the Sub Zero. Averaged 168 - 173 (highest 174). I started with the weight back and was getting some pretty good spin numbers, but still had a few that started to creep over 3000 RPM. Good hits were typically under 2500 with ones higher on the face closer to 2100 or even 1900. However, even with the weight forward and the loft down, it was spinning on average 2500, with a couple still around 3000 and only 1 or 2 at or below 2000. Mishits were again, similar to the Srixon losing around 15 yards on bad strikes. All in all not so bad.

Feel - Srixon

Looks - Srixon

Ball Speed - Sub Zero

Spin - Sub Zero

Dispersion - Equal

What I did notice, is that almost all of my shots were missing Right of the target significantly. I'm wondering if this was because of the shaft, that I was having trouble closing the face. Typically my mishits are high & right, but when I strike my Driver well it's almost always straight or a slight draw. This is making me think that that shaft is not my best fit. I must've been having trouble closing the face, which also could've been contributing to the less-than-ideal spin. I would like to test again with a couple different shafts in both heads to determine which could give me the best numbers. When hit in the middle, both Drivers produced very similar numbers in terms of distance. The Sub Zero had higher ball speed and slightly lower spin, but the Srixon launched a little higher on these hits. Both of these Drivers are great and I would recommend you try them!!

I have the data from the Drivers, however, they are all lumped together. Meaning, the fitter didn't change the color of the ball flights so I don't have a summary of each of the 3 (including my gamer). But as I was swinging, these are the trends I was noticing. Again, these are my findings based on the way I deliver the club. Hope you can get something out of it.

Good test! How'd did the results of your current gamer compare? Better or worse than the other two?

Ironically enough, I only took about 8 swings with my Driver and probably 15-20 each with the other 2. My current gamer had lower ball speeds averaging from 162 - 165 (highest was 168) and spin was between 2350 and 3000, which isn't too bad actually. My ball flight has just been extremely high on the course (average was ~130ft here, with a few over 140) and I'm looking to decrease that.

My gamer actually spun a little less than the Srixon on average (Srixon was over 3000 a bunch for me), which could have just come down to strike point. Ball speed was higher on both the Srixon & Sub Zero than my gamer, and the height on average was a bit lower. When the Srixon spun up, the height was similar and carry was a little down, but the Sub Zero height was a bit lower.

I will say that I typically tee my Driver a fraction higher than the tee height I hit on the monitor. I would imagine this led to strikes perhaps a bit lower on the face than normal? That's the only gripe I have when testing indoors is that I can't set my natural tee height exact. Though it's close, when you're talking about a few mm making a significant difference in launch parameters, optimal tee height is important.

Highest ball speed I've seen on those monitors with my gamer is 170. So the 3-4mph increase in ball speed I was seeing, coupled with lower spin and similar launch should give me an additional 10-15 yards I would imagine.

The tee height isn't so far off, but off enough where I think my spin would be lower on the course.

Sounds like the new shafts were too stiff compared to your gamer. Depending on how you load the shaft and your release, the extra stiff shafts would most likely be a better fit based on swingspeed but they may take some time to get used to.

I would normally agree with that assessment, but my gamer was going way right too. It was a strange Driver session in terms of the direction of my shots. I was able to turn some over, but out of 36 shots, only 7 went left.

Edit: I will say, I've been doing Superspeed Golf for the last 4-5 weeks, but I've been to the range a couple times and didn't notice any leakage to the right with any club. Ironically enough, I can't hit the Driver at this particular range, but none of my iron or 3w shots were going 25-35 yards right like these were.
