Repainting/Refinishing TM Spider Tour Platinum

Recently acquired a stock Taylormade Spider Tour Platinum putter. Really like the feel and design of the putter. Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of the color scheme (silver/red). I have done some research on dismantling the head to properly repaint, but there are few examples or descriptions on how to do so. From what I have found, boiling/heating the face plate and sole plate to loosen the adhesive on these plates is required to get access to the screws that hold it together. Has anyone attempted this or found good instruction on how to do so?

First off, I'm with you! I have 4 spiders (the various nexts, models, etc) and I hate RED. I've had them ALL re-done. Yes, I have issues.... ;)

I'd be VERY careful. It's very tricky and requires a double-sided tape that affixes the insert into the putter. I'm not sure that you can buy it, either.... It can be done but you need to know what you are doing. A very good friend of mine who owns NorCal putters experimented with mine and it never felt the same without the tape to re-affix the insert. Through working on mine he learned how to do it right and now knows how but mine never felt the same. I should note that he paid for the entire thing (he bought me a brand new one and refinished it again and nailed it. He's a good guy). But, the moral of the story is; it's a multimaterial, complex putter with aluminium, plastic, tape and all kinds of stuff. Not saying you can't do it, just be careful or send it to someone that knows what they're doing it.

Carlos/Norcal is definitely familiar with them now and has now done a ton of them. BOS also does a fabulous job as some of their folks, I believe, used to work with the insert when they worked for TM.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the heads up. Yeah, I couldn’t find much on it being done, so I figured it was more complex than I had hoped. Good to know that even once you get it apart, without the right exact materials it might just never be the same. Will probably game it for a bit and decide later on if it’s worth sending in (I’ve heard great things about NorCal). Thanks again!

I'm in the middle of redoing a tm ghost spider...

Nightmare.

I picked it up quite cheap so looked like a good idea!

Got the face off with boiling water which was quite easy. The the bottom plate has to come off after cutting out the white filler around the plate (this took forever)

Then the screws under the face insert were tough to unscrew as they were glued in!

And the 2 screws that were holding the frame together were plastered with glue so they had to be burnt to loosen!

After all that the white paint REALLY doesn't want to come off..

In hindsight unless your making a big profit or youve got three weeks to kill...don't bother.

They look great but are a bugger to refinish..

I'll try and put pics up

Kris
