Iron shafts - which one helped you the most

I tend to do best with steel shafts around 100 grams in weight. Best flex usually Regular, with Stiff or Stiff softstepped an occasional recommendation.

Interesting shafts I tried but did not buy...

  • The KBS Tour 90 has performed well in a number of demo day iron tests, from multiple club manufacturers.
  • In Ping irons the CFS R-flex (now legacy) and the AWT 2.0 both flew well.
  • Recoil 95 F3 (R-flex) also flew well.

In my backup SLDR irons, the KBS Tour C-Taper 90 (proprietary) works well. TM was a bit cryptic about the specs of the shaft, but a KBS rep reported it was similar to KBS Tour 90, but launches a bit lower.

My current X20 Tours came with PX 5.0 Rifle Flighted (a 115-gram, robust R-flex), but the PX proved harsh when I wasn't swinging solidly.

So, I went the NS Pro 8950 GH (97 grams and a half flex softer). The 8950 is a high launch, low spin shaft that holds distance well into the wind. It gets much of its stopping power from a steep descent angle. A decent iron shot lands, checks up a tad, and then releases a few feet.

All the shafts I have mentioned are in my shaft band. They all are lively without being mushy, and deliver solid feel at impact.

Fujikura pro 85 grams has been a tremendous shaft for me. They’re longer and more accurate than the Nippon 950s I was playing prior. My last 3 sets all had the Nippons and I was very pleased with them as well. First time using graphite in my irons and right now I don’t see myself going back to steel.

I’m still on the hunt...

Moved from Steelfiber 110cw stiff ( a bit too stiff for me after about 3 years) to Modus 105 and improved accuracy but some days wrist and elbow pain returns.

Currently trying PXLZ 105 5.5, and while the jury is still out, I’m liking them quite a bit.

Biggest change for me in the past 25 years was going from DGs300 to DGSL S300. Moving to a lightweight steel shaft around 2007 really helped with fatigue at the end of round.

As we all know, lightweight steel shafts have come along way since then and I have found that the 105-115 gm weights work best for my swing.

S300 to c-taper recently for me. Initial impression is that c-taper has a ton better dispersion. The ball doesn't curve much with these shafts.

That's funny. I saw the exact opposite,,,,,,,,,, although not a "ton" better dispersion. Went back to the DGs more for "feel".

When I fit myself for my G20s (R.I.P.) 6 years ago I tried all sorts of different shafts for at least 5 different sessions and the S300 was a clear winner in dispersion at the cost of about 2 yards in distance. A true no brainer. Frankly, I don't recall if the C-Taper was one of the "contestants" at that time.

After 2 or 3 years I swapped out the S300s for the C-Tapers. I confess I didn't see a whole lot of difference between the 2 but the "boardy" feel of the C-Tapers got me to go back to the DG300s after 6 months or so.

Now I have AP-1s with DGS300s and couldn't be happier.

I've got 1 round and several range sessions on my c-tapers sp they're still new. However, the difference in just a small amount of time has been a clear winner. If I end up falling out of love with the c-tapers then I'll go to x100. The s300 are just a bit too flex soft for my swing. I have been upgrading all shafts to much stiffer shafts tho...and have been seeing rewards from that change.

DG X-100 and DG S-300 up to 2006 when I purchased Callaway original X-Forged with Project X 6.0 shafts. Though I tried a few KBS shafts, still playing standard PX 6.0, Flighted 6.0 and standard PX 5.5.

Was forced to go lighter due to elbow issues and landed on the KBS Tour-V 110S. Have had them in my last 3 sets. Sweet spot for me.

I have Aldila NV Pro 105's in my irons, stiff flex. I love the shafts, and they've been much easier on my joints than steel shafts.

A secondary advantage to committing to these shafts is that I'm rarely tempted to try different irons. It's hard to find a set with these exact shafts in them to try, and when I do they're usually very expensive.

FWIW my heads are Srixon i506's. These clubs came off their tour van many moons ago.

No idea what shafts I used to play in the past. Always got stock standard stiff shafts before getting fitted for the first time last year. Playing C-taper 125 g stiff plus shafts which have lowered my ball flight and are much straighter with more consistent ball flight. Good improvement but not as much of an improvement as when I was fitted for a new driver shaft.

What iron shafts have you played that helped your game the most?

And what iron shafts were you gaming before making the switch?!?

Of course everyone’s mileage will vary per shaft, so I thought this would be very interesting!

Steelfiber i95

i used to play DGS300

Steelfibers are longer, more accurate and better dampening.

Played KBS Tour 120, CTL, Tour V 110 and DGS300, but am currently playing PX 5.5 flighted shafts... Love them but I am having this mad hook issue with the 4i. All the rest are fine, especially the shorter irons, but the 4, sometimes 5, like to go left. Starting to wonder if they are a tad soft when trying to be aggressive. Overall, they have been a fantastic shaft for me.

I was in Modus 130x for the last 3 seasons.

Made a few swing changes working with a coach and things weren't quite the same. Had a couple demos built with Accra shafts. I couldn't believe how good they were.

Found a set at my specs, same heads I was playing, built with Accra 100i M5. Spin is the same if not lower than 130X. Launched in a window and dispersion was so much better.

I thought I would struggle with the weight change, but after 15 rounds now, I am in love. reshafted my wedges and 2 iron as well with matching shafts.

Accra makes a great product. If things go right in testing, I will have 3W-LW all shafted with Accra.

It was the DG SL S300 for me. But it could’ve been any lightweight shaft really. 130 gram steel shafts probably aren’t great for the average player.

I use the NS Pro 980GH now and I would say it feels much nicer than the DG SL in a similar weight range

I played TT Dynamic Gold S300 shafts for about 15 years and then tried KBS Tour 120 for a few years and didn't like them with the Mizuno JPX825 Pro. I then tried the

Nippon Modus Tour 120 and the shaft combined with the OnOff Kuro is absolute Money... I can flight the ball down or hit it high on demand. Smooth and controlled and it

just works for my swing.

Project X always fitted me but never really enjoyed the "feel" so always played DG S300. Then through my last couple of fittings I found a happy medium, the Project X LZ which I have now in a couple of sets. They have dropped my spin down and given the distances I should be getting with my swing speed.

So many great shafts. My favorites: Project X Rifles 5.5, C Taper Lite X flex soft-stepped, C Taper Reg-plus, Dynamic Gold 120, Nippon 125 and 1150 GH, Steelfiber 110 reg or 95 stiff, KBS Tour 120 stiff and Nippon 120. The Nippon 125 are the heaviest but don’t feel like it, the Steelfiber CW 95 are the lightest but don’t feel like it.

Seem to always feel best in the 110-120 gram range.

I'm coming of KBS Tour V X SoftStepped 2x in TM RSi TPs - no real complaints other than probably a little too stiff for me, although loved the dispersion. I just got a new set of TM P770s with the KBS Tour FLT and for whatever reason didn't care for them. Re-shafted with some old-school TT Tour Concept Satins in R flex HardStepped 1x, and am in heaven so far! Not sure if it's the heads, shafts, or combination of the 2 but I'm a club longer, dispersion is the same or better, flight is a little lower but with same spin, and feel is AWESOME!

From various TT and Ping steel over the years to Nippon about 5-6 years ago was a big jump; not getting any younger, I made the switch to graphite last year (no knock on the Nippon 1050's - they're fine shafts).

I can now play pain free & as I no longer have a very agressive transition, I was able to fit into an inexpensive Graphite Design iron shaft with little downside.

So with the $20+ per shaft I saved, I went out & bought yet another driver I can't hit worth a s***.
