After MONTHS of Waiting, Finally got my hands on a Cayman!

Recommended Posts

Boy, was I disappointed.
After months of waiting and bugging Rife about the delays on the new Cayman putter, I finally got may hands on it. I have been lusting after this putter since seeing the early tour pictures, dating back to last fall. I currently play a YES! Tracy II and thought this would replace it.

Wow, was I disappointed. I wanted to love it, but I just didn't. I didn't like the thick top line or how the hosel flowed into the head. Could have forgiven that, however, if I could have made any putts with it. I really did not like the weighting either. Seemed too heavy to me.

I am sure that there are many people that will love it, but I left it at the altar.

However, the Barbados was really looking good to me and was putting a great roll on the ball.

How have others found the Cayman - or the Barbados?

I have a Rife Barbados and this putter is great for anyone with more of a SBST (straight back straight through) stroke. The center alignment piece with three sight lines really help to frame the ball and the putter puts a great roll on it. It is on the heavier side (not sure exactly how heavy, if anyone could answer that would be great, but i believe it is more than 350g) but i prefer a heavier putter because it does alot of the work for me. The Barbados is a great putter. The Cayman looked good as well, but i dont really have a open close/gate type of stroke. hope this helps

Their website says that it has a 345g head...what length are you using? This will definintly have an effect on how heavy it feels.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I've finally got the lie angle adjusted on my Cayman and have been out with it a few times this week. Coming off a pretty good round last weekend with the Tracy II, so I'm not quick to mess around here. But I have to admit the Cayman has been an easy switch for me so far. Like an earlier poster said if it could find the hole it would work. I'm here to say I think I can make it work.

It's strange comparing the Rife to the Yes. I think the Yes puts a quicker roll on the ball. But I've had problems using the Yes just off the green (no Texas wedge with the Yes). It would always seem to come up short. The Rife gave a more predictable roll from the fringe and on fast greens it was easy to adapt to the roll.

Now I will agree with the OP on the quality issue. The Cayman seems to fall short of prior Rife models. The way the shaft is joined to the neck is poorly conceived and cheaply done. The fake milling marks on the back bumpers are a joke. The design is fine but the manufacturing is falling short. If this was the hold up getting the Cayman to market (which it was) I'd hate to see what Rife rejected! Hopefully, this will get taken care of in the near future because Rife could have a real winner here.

But unlike many I'm able to overlook the quality issues and it will find a spot in the bag as long as the ball is finding the hole.

Interesting comments / opinions. I had to get up and go get the Cayman from my tour bag to take a look. The thick top line comment vs. the Barbados top line makes me go ???

As far as the milling marks how can they be fake when the putter is CNC milled. Style is everything and different to you vs. Mr. Rife. You can always have someone smooth these out if it really bugs you.

Looking at the hosel there could be a smoother transition from the joint but that would require the shaft to blend in from the top and that thinning to the head might not have looked good vs. what we have in final product.

Putter design is all about compromise and putter production is another animal all together. To say that the quality is at issue here is a pretty big step. While the style may not be exactly to your eye or expectation it's all about the way it rolls the ball. Remember if you put a putter down and it does not please your eye then you're fighting an uphill battle.

Again, "If you think you can, or think you can't...you're right."

I would be disappointed with any RIFE putter as well. Try a C&L or a Byron and you will be very pleased!
