Spin - Lie Angle & Getting Fit

Hi Club Builders!

Question for the group.

Last night I was doing some casual club fitting with my instructor on his GCQuad. He noticed that, with my 7 iron, I was hitting the ball 3-4 degrees upright, and my spin was 4k - 4.3k. My clubs are already 4 degrees flat.

We proceeded to hit a variety of different clubs & shaft combinations, mainly to see if we can bring up the spin, nothing seemed to do the trick, highest I was able to get to was ~ 4.8k - 5k on a 7 iron, he was interested in getting me to 6 - 6.5k. (we also tested different balls to see if we could bring spin up and didn't find any clear winners).

My swing speed with a 7 iron is ~ 74-76 MPH, ball speed 102-105, carry around 140 -145.

I don't have any trouble getting my hybrids to spin @ 4-5k (I carry a 4 & 5 hybrid), just my irons don't seem to have enough stopping power (6 iron spin 3.3 - 3.8k)

My questions are:

  1. how much does lie angle effect backspin (or is it just side spin?)
  2. Although I have been professionally fitted for my current clubs, would it make sense trying to get refit?

Thanks!

So if you are swinging an iron 7-8 degrees toe up, you are going to have to deloft to some degree to hit target. And/or struggle to hit center of face, both of which will cost you distance and spin.

If they already have you 4* flat I'm not sure they can go much more.

Not a club fitter or pro so grain of salt needed.

Well that all sounds like it fits but the solution is going to have to come from a real instructor. You actually have the handle too "low" whereas most people struggle with high handle/early extension. Well you have the entire internet at your disposal and the only thing to lose is your entire golf swing and/or sanity :pimp:

This test was most likely done from a mat, not real grass, and then launch gets higher and spin lower.

A test done by Trackman showed up to 2.7 higher launch angle and 1928 rpm lower spin

(they are NOT constant numbers, they will vary depending on the mat, compared to what kind of turf...)

Take a ball marker test on your lie angles, the info you provide sounds very strange.

Not to say one or the other is correct, but others have disagreed with the mat vs turf related to spin...

Please read it over....

From the mat, launch angle goes up and spin goes down, in the video you link to, not as much as the in the test Trackman did, and like i said, the difference depend on the mat and compared to what turf, but the trend is the same, launch goes up and spin goes down when we hit from a mat, so where is the disagreement? Your video also dont measure club data, so we dont get to know AOA, and it has to be the same on both surfaces to make a compare. In general a player with a step AOA gets a larger difference between the turf and the mat vs a player with a shallow AOA

Thanks @ all!

I am currently hitting of a country club elite mat, I actually have my foresight data if anyone is interested.

I can tell you my built:

  • P - 5 iron - Oban 115CT shafts, cut 0.5 inch?, regular +?
  • LW - 5 iron bent from 5.5 degree - 4 degree descending
  • 58/53/50 degree wedge, custom grind, nippon 125 wedge shaft

Fitted by Joe Kwok here in SF.

I'm 5'4 have a somewhat flat swing and shallow divots. Not sure on my wrist to floor, can check when I get home. Instructor tried some different things, ultimately, I couldn't get my lie angle lower than 2/3 degrees.

AOA is -2 to - 3 degrees

Thanks

thanks. always respect your posts and opinions so thought i'd get your thoughts on the video as others have mentioned it before. seems the common answer is mats affect spin, and its just determining by how much as there can be multiple factors in swing AoA along with quality of mat.

Maybe you should go another half inch shorter and a degree flatter. Might simply be forced to create a taller swing plane, especially with that 7 through your wedges. I'd try and get data off of grass and then decide if you're comfortable rolling a 7 and stronger up to the pin or whether you want to chase spin numbers.
