Speaking from an influential point of view:

    Alice Cooper Social Distortion

    MC5 The Runaways

Iggy Pop and the Stooges The Ramones

    New York Dolls The Misfits

    Bob Dylan Black Flag

    Van Halen Kiss

    Slayer Velvet Underground

    Alice In Chains Soundgarden

    Just to name a few.
  • Grateful Dead

    Boston

    Eagles

    Lynyrd Skynyrd

    GNR

    Red Hot Chili Peppers

    Soundgarden

    Pearl Jam

    Velvet Revolver

    Pearl Jam

    Velvet Revolver

I'd add Nirvana to this list. But I agree with most. I think the Dead were able to encapsulate that early punk vibe (even tho they were jam rock) due to the fact that they were anti establishment to the core. Now that's Rock N Roll. Their musical expanse over such a period of time, touched not just one demographic, but many.

Earth, Wind, and Fire is a great choice. I guess I should have been more unambiguous in the criteria. CSN&Y was formed in the states, but neither Nash nor Young are American, so that's a borderline pick. Oh, and cdnglf - shame on you.

There is a huge difference between greatest American band and most influential. And I would say, very few of the truly influential bands ever made it big because they were largely ahead of their time, and subsequently hung it up shortly thereafter (or the savant died early like Hendrix and Cobain).

How about adding Kansas to the mix of great American bands.

If you want an American band doesn't it have to be Grand Funk Railroad?
