Best player iron under $500

eddie3392eddie3392 Members Posts: 307 ✭✭
Looking to get a nice set or near mint set of player irons with forgiveness. I have tested all AP2 and not a fan for some reason. I don't want to spend a lot of money and have had a hard time kicking out my old set of TM MC 14. Looking for suggestions or opinions on what set of irons are worth buying that is some what newer than my TMs.

... Imo the best all round players irons with a great combination of size, workability, excellent feel and forgiveness are the Cobra's Amp Forged/Fly Z+/Forged Tours. I have played all of them. The Fly Z+ 5-pw can be ordered direct from Cobra for $534, as single irons for $89 each:

All of them? They are all good.

Seriously $500 is a high ceiling for a set of irons in very nice shape. Heck I just bought a set of really tidy i210s (4-PW) for $540. Probably the equivalent of 1 month's steady use 'wear' on them.

Be patient, know what's a good deal and what isn't and have at it.

Srixon 7 series, Bridgestone J15CBs, Ping S or I series... soooo many choices.

Maltby DBM...look like a blade, but as forgiving as anything on the market. You can shaft them up with anything under the sun and still have money left in your budget.

JPX 900 tours. Amazing feel, looks fantastic , very workable, gets played on tour by non-contracted players. It's more forgiving than a blade.

You can get a set of Wilson Staff V4's for ~$250. I think the V6's can be had for ~$400

New might not be better. Ping I200 is similar to the TP MC.

seriously yea if cost is the most important part and you dunno what you want, just go on ebay, type "iron set" with whatever shaft you want also in the search, and filter by most bids.

You will know they are solid that way. Vote of the people lol.

Have narrowed my list down to 18 SC, Z765, and 900T. Hit the 716 cb today, and the shape and size is just about perfect but I didn’t like the feel at all.

I was just looking at 716 CB.... we are in the exact same boat!

Should definitely look into Maltby clubs. My TE Forged look just like a butter knife blade from address but are as forgiving as any club I’ve hit.

Srixon 745s are tough to beat IMO. The 716 cb are also really great, just a tad less forgiving than the 745s for me, but as forgiving as the AP2. I have a lightly used set of 716 cb I am considering parting with but they are so beautiful I don't want to regret it!!

There are tons of options here if your budget is that high. Even the Srixon 945s are a good option, look a bit more player like than the 745s and are nearly as forgiving. Also like the MP15..... tons of options.

This was my immediate thought as well. I'm in the UK, not the US, but you can pick up the fly-z plus or forged tours (they are essentially the same) either nearly new or as clearance for well inside the OP's budget. They are a fantastic combination of size, looks, sound, feel, forgiveness yada yada.

As cobra doesn't have the high profile in the players club market that some of the other brands mentioned do, you get a lot more for your money.

I know that the amp forged are also considered as from the same cloth, but examples will be tired by now, and personally I found the fly-z plus to play a good bit nicer. Also looks a ton better sans orange.
