Do you really need a 3 wood still.

With all the talk about utilitiy irons I brought one to see if there is a place in my bag. It was a perfect replacement for the 5wood. It so much better I can hit it a similar distance but it is way more useful.

It so versatile that I am wondering is there a good replacement for a 3 wood? It better to get a lower loft utility club.

I got my U45 bent to 17* at 40.5” OAL in a Recoil 110 and it actually bump out my 15* 3 wood.

Ended up trading the 15* for a 13.5* 3 wood which I rarely use now since a stinger 2 iron just runs for days. My stinger shot is only 10 yards short of my strong 3 wood but the assurance of in playability is priceless.

I am now looking at GW to replace the strong 3 wood.

i donno, i like having a 3wood for days im not getting along with my driver. not sure id be comfy hitting a driving iron 270+. id lose too must distance on mishits with said utility iron compared to an equivalent mishit using a 3wood.

i have experimented enough to know 100% though. just a gut feeling.

well yeh, that's how long id need it to be if it were to kick my 3wood out of the bag.

Not necessarily. You need a club that can be used off the fairway to get you max height and distance, and possibly as an alternative from the tee.

For some thats a 3 wood. For me it’s a 4 wood. For others it’s a 2 hybrid. Life is too short and the technology too good to be pigeonholed into carrying a club you won’t use

I use 5 wood instead of 3 wood. I do bag a 3 wood sometimes if I want it for shorter par 4s. 5 wood is way easier off the deck than a driving iron, goes higher, and lands softer into greens. Really depends on what you're after. If I played links style courses I would. My courses are soft so a driving iron is pointless.

I was going driver then 16.5* driving iron. The driving iron is great off the tee and while I can hit it off the deck I don’t elevate it quite enough for it to not To be a 1 trick pony.

So I’m going with a “soft” 3 wood, meaning something I can work a bit and isn’t just a low spin bomber off the tee. Then I’m going to get a 20* or so driving iron that I ought to still be able to get out there but also elevate a bit.

what bothers me about a 3 wood is it almost feels like it is a club of last resort. If I have a hazard to clear or the landing area is tight I am better off using a different club because 1 out of 10 doesn’t always fly like you expect. I also never know how far it roll.

What scares me about a utility or driving iron is it might actually be harder to hit and ultimately be the same thing as a 3 wood.

I go driver, Callaway 3 deep, 18 hybrid.

It’s more optimal for me to setup my 3 wood for tee shots as it’s rarely used off the deck

id be curious if there are any 280+ average hitters that don't carry one.

I think it all comes down to your game vs the courses you play on. I have a MP H5 1 iron that I bought to replace my hybrid because I hit the hybrid too high if it is windy. The 1 iron is great off of the tee because I can hit bullets with it that run for a while. However, it is very difficult to hit well off of the ground and to get a lot of elevation, so it is mostly a tee club. Thus, if I'm playing a course where I might need to hit a long shot from the fairway and land it soft, the 1 iron makes that hard, so I either need to have a fairway wood or hybrid that I can use to hit that shot. In my case, I'm moving away from the 1 iron toward a hybrid and I'm going to work on being able to flight it down when I need to.

I actually have a 3 and 5 wood still which seems rare on here. I’ve thought about getting rid of the 5 wood but I am so accurate with it and can land it soft from 230-235 away. The 3 wood stays in my bag when the driver is bad, plus if I can go for it on a longer par 3 with little trouble around the green I always use it, but when I swing hard with it it’s a hook machine

I average around 280 off the tee and go driver-4 wood-21h. I am playing around with a 3 iron for next season but I’m not comfortable hitting an iron lower than that.

Whatever works for your game and your goals.

However, I wonder if crushing hybrids all day could impact your driver swing? If that happens i'd pull the driver too, add a wedge and move up a set of tees.

If the PGA Tour outlawed three woods you would probably see more four woods.

I would consider myself a decent ball striker irons and driving have always been my strong point.

I'm good with 3 wood of the tee and am hit or miss with it off the deck. I can't commit to hitting down on it no matter what I try so sometimes end up helping it into the air but doesn't happen.

I just went back to trying hybrids after years of 3 wood and a 2 iron. I am now putting an 18*(17.5*actual loft) and a 22 degree in the bag and dropping the 3 wood. I play my hybrids the same as irons and take a shallow divot.

I'm long enough for where I want and I will take a safety club that's 10 yards shorter over a club that can sometimes end with a double miss.

Keep it between the trees.

I'm short by wrx standards. Love my 3 wood. If I play a long par 4 and hit a bad drive, it gives me a chance to get there.

And I use it on placement tee shots for shorter par 4s with trouble at my driver length.

I rarely hit it second on par 5s for distance unless I can get there in two. If I'm gonna need 3 anyway, no point.

But I really love finding it sitting on a slight uphill in a long spot, and relish the chance to get nearly driver distance from the fairway.

If you don't drive it 300, and you don't love your 3w, how many par 5s are you missing out on eagle tries for?

Love my 3 wood. Anecdotally, you never see anyone on tour without one. Anecdotally (part 2) ~ one of my best golf partners plus a 4w after his driver. Guess it’s all personal preference ;-)

I don’t play too many courses where you’re better off hitting 3 wood over driver off of the tee on long par 4’s and par 5’s but I still feel a lot more comfortable keeping one in the bag. The caviate being my current HL 3w is nice off of the tee but I’m having some issues with it off the deck. I might end up taking it out but my old 3w will be going back in the bag if that’s the case (plus I’m terrible with driving irons)

I also use a 2 UDI so there wasn't much need for a 3wood IN THE SUMMER. Now that its winter however, its a different story. I only have a 54 and a 58 wedge so I have space. Im able to throw my 3wood back in there just to fill my bag. I might however replace it with a 5wood instead for pesky windy 3 pars.
