How many balls do you carry?

When I'm riding or pushing the Clic Gear I have the habit of grabbing a new sleeve in pushing it into a pocket in the bag without knowing how many I already have. when I go to clean the bag out to walk a round there can be as many as 2 dozen balls in the bag. They may be the heaviest thing in the bag for a lot of players.

Usually 3+ sleeves. I often use 1 ball the entire round, but every once in a while there's one of those days that challenges the entire supply...

Had an old friend/mentor that used to say, "if you need more than two sleeves of balls to play, you'd be better off spending your time on the range practicing, than on the course losing balls."

Years ago on business trip, played a woodlands course with 3 co workers that I hadn’t played with. Couple had rented clubs and one other had his. They were going to buy balls and I had 12 and other guy had 6 so we started out. Should have been omen as on first tee guy hit a car in parking lot, but we found that ball. on 18 it was play hard as we only

had the 1 ball each was playing and first tee shot flew int the woods!

Usually carry 12 but got to course the other day and only had 5; lost 4 on first 2 holes and figured the round was soon over as walking alone. Found 2 balls in right rough on 3 and then finished the round with only the 1 ball. I don’t do a lot of ball hunting but found 5 more balls and finished with 8 balls.

Several sleeves of new balls and 8-10 previously used by me or someone else. I typically lose a couple of balls per round unless I am playing a practice (solo) round where I can get crazy and lose 6-12 balls trying almost impossible to make shots. One advantage of being a 16 HCP is I prefer playing low compression balls like the Softfli, TruSoft, Supersoft, and cost is not a factor if I lose a bunch on a practice round. I have never ran out of balls since I carry quite a few and also believe that having a reasonable abundance of golf balls is one less thing to worry about. For the record I usually ride and sometimes use a pull cart on executive courses so an extra 8-10 balls is of no concern.

1/2 new sleeves + bout a half dozen shag balls i find and keep in the bottom of the bag.

Sometimes when the course is dead and you make a crap shot, or want to try a crazy shot, you need a shag ball to hit.

In competition, I almost always have a full dozen. Usually start with 3 sleeves of new balls and a sleeve of used balls for use when warming up. If the event is spread across multiple days, the ratio of new to used changes during the event, but I don't put any new balls in the bag unless I burned through a lot and get down to just one sleeve of new balls in the bag.

2 sleeves of new and a 2 or 3 used ones.

If I ever needed more than that I’d just quit the round and go home.

I echo the same comment: 2 sleeves of Titleist ProV1 (high numbers) and 2 or 3 used balls.

I have carried as many as 60, and I usually walk. The reason was purely logistics; I didn’t have another place to put them at home so every ball I found went into the bag and would stay there. Then I bought a 5 gallon bucket and now it’s more like 12-20, before I play and find balls (I find too many, often 5-10 per round; my course has a lot of tall grass natural areas and such) and the number increases to 40 or so and then I empty it again.

In my bag I have 3 to 4 B330rx and then I have 10 to 12 bargain balls on hand. My limit for a round is two B330rx a round and that depends how I'm playing and when I lose them. If I'm playing crappy then I'll use one. If I lose it late in the round, then I'll use one. If I'm playing lights out and lose one, then I'll play another. This keeps my costs down and it has done me well over the years.

    Usually

    - 1 brand new sleeve

    - 1 "in-play" sleeve (started brand new)

    - 3-6 "playable" balls in a pinch, also used for chipping practice

When the playable balls get unplayable I retire them to my home bag shag or bomb them into a hazard / ocean on a course I play.

There are probably 35-40 in there now. I'll grab a new sleeve most rounds and usually find more than I lose and don't empty the bag as often as I should. Sometimes, there are 60 in there. Then I'll finally clear out the beat up ones and get back down to two dozen. I'll usually hit a wedge into the woods near the parking lot before going to the first tee -- that's my warm-up.

Generally, I carry a dozen of my current ball and keep three or four "water balls" in my top bag pocket. If I go to a course I've never played I usually grab an extra sleeve. I don't even like the thought of running out...LOL

I normally have 3 new balls, 4 to 5 water balls and 1 dozen new balls in the side pocket.

Carrying so got it down to 5 or 6. Mainly distance balls with the odd better ball if it gets above 7 degrees.

Around 12-15. My bag has a little 3-ball holder under the handle for quick access and I keep another 9-12 in one of the pockets.

Way too many. I find so many quality balls lost at my home course that I end the year with more golf balls than I stated the season with.

I have a ton of lakeballs I play with and always have about 20/30 in my bags. Both carry and cartbag.

Now I've bought premium balls, i'll play them on my home course and the others when i'm on a course i don't know.

One time I lost 10 balls playing 9 holes. I don't spend time on searching though. If I don't see it where I thought it landed I just drop a new one and keep going.

I always carry at least a dozen.

Really depends on the round. If I'm playing a tourney and either carrying or push carting, I'll take 2 sleeves of new. Most rounds I won't use more than 3 balls, unless something goes wrong. I've found that the extra weight adds up, even though it might not seem like much.

If I'm playing a screw-a-round and I don't really care that much, I'll take maybe 3 sleeves of used and 1 of new.

6-9 typically. If i know I am going to be playing multiple days in a row I might throw in some extra so I don't have to worry about it.
  • spartan6910spartan6910 Go Green, Go White! San DiegoMembers Posts: 380 ✭✭
For those of you who are saying you throw extra in if you're playing multiple days, why not just keep a box in your car trunk and only carry as many as you need for a given round? I'm seriously flabbergasted that some guys are carrying in the range of 20-40 golf balls in their bag at any given time.

I probably only use about six, but as I find balls on the course or I decide to try a different brand I don't take the old ones out the bag. I've been known to have about twenty in my trolley bag in summer!
