Question on driver shaft and tipping

My question relates to tipping a driver shaft. It seems most shaft manufacturers don’t recommend tipping when installing into a driver; however, I see many tour players do seem to tip their driver shafts. So, I’m a bit confused as to whether my son should try tipping his driver shaft.

As far as his specifics: He is a former D1

player, very strong swing. CHS in low to mid-120s. Ball Speeds 180-185. Plans on giving the min-tours a go and see what happens. Currently plays a PX 6.5 in irons which he loves. Fights a hook with the driver, despite hitting his irons great. He has a G400 Max head he wants to try. Looking at ordering a Kuro Kage. Possibly the XT, dual core XT or XD for it in the 70 gram range. Has not tried a tipped driver shaft in many years. I’m thinking it may help with control. No possible option to try first. Thoughts? Also, thoughts on those 3 shaft options, as well?

Tell him to go get fit... If he's trying to be a mini tour player, he'll want his stuff dialed in to a T.

Very general rule that definitely isn’t set in stone. It depends on tempo and transition and the shaft.

115-120 tip a TX 1/2 inch to 1 inch

125+ tip a TX 1 inch to 1.5 inch

I would say that tipping at least an inch at 125 is essential. Even more so if it’s just an X and not a TX.

I’m at 110 and I usually play an untipped TX. At the moment I’m playing an old grafalloy blue in stiff tipped 1.5 inches.

Good advice. Rory plays one of these and is close to your sons swing speed. look at these guys to get ideas as they are all similar to his speed.
