Driver shaft recommendation for KBS C-Taper (stiff) Iron shaft user

Earlier this year I was fit into KBS C-Taper (stiff) iron shafts with JPX900 HM heads earlier this year. During the fitting my 6i SS was measured around 90mph.

It took me a while to get used to them but now I’m getting really consistent with them. I used to struggle with iron play but now it has become one of the better parts of my game.

The issue with my game currently is getting off of the tee. For context I’m consistently hitting my 7i-165 and my 5i-195. My drives are normally just over 200 yards. Every once in a while I’ll catch one on the screws and get it out there about 260ish, but whenever I really go after it, it’s anyone’s guess as to where it’s going to end up.

Currently I have 2 drivers in rotation;

Cobra Fly-Z with the stock Matrix VLST stiff shaft

Callaway XR Pro with a UST Elements Wind 6f4 stiff shaft.

Both of these drivers feel a little whippy to me and I really need to slow down my swing to make sure I’m making contact. I have the sensation of losing the clubhead in the back of my swing causing my backswing to get too long which contribute to some syncing issues. Both of these shafts are in the 60g range so I’m thinking that I need to at least get something heavier weight like my irons.

TL;DR: people who play c-tapers, what shaft do you have in your driver?

You would want a separate fitting for your drivers. Not everyone swings the driver with the same force they swing irons.

I saw a fitting at a local shop this summer. The golfer was a tall, athletic guy in his late 20s. The prior week, the fitter had put him into an 80-gram Stiff shaft for his driver.

For his irons, however, the recommendation was a DG 115 R-flex. While very aggressive with his driver, he had a much smoother, tempo swing with his irons.

Your iron shafts are 120 grams before trimming. That’s not terribly heavy.

I play 120x gram Tour V’s and a 63 gram Grafalloy Blue in stiff tipped 1.5 inches. Combo works fine for me. Everyone is different.

Carry my 5 iron 205 and my driver 270-275.

You obviously have something very weird happening if you are 195 with a 5 iron and just over 200 with the driver.

I’d spend the money on lessons before equipment. The Fly-z And the XR Pro you have are good drivers with good shafts. Something besides your equipment needs addressed.
