Set or specialty gap wedge?

I just got a new set of irons (p760s) and I'm going to be adding a gap wedge to my bag. I've always felt slightly more comfortable hitting a full shot with a pitching wedge than my sand wedge. I think some of it has to do with the straighter leading edge but not particularly sure. I'm looking for the thoughts of others on this. Positives/negatives. Any feedback appreciated.

I would go with the set GW because you will get that consistency on distance, spin, feel and flight relative to the PW when you consider full shots.

To me the SW and LW are specialty clubs within their own merits. To go the specialty GW route, you would model off the SW distance and characteristics ie greenside play vs full shots from the fairways.

The general consensus on these forums is if you intend to primarily hit full shots with it, go with the matching set wedge. If it is going to be a big part of your short game, find one with the loft and grind you feel fits best. As always, be mindful of your distance gapping. Two different styles of wedges, even though they may be the same loft often will carry different distances. Hope this helps.

Yeah I'm intending to use it for mostly full shots. I've never had one so I'm interested to try and use it in the short game too.

I go 47* 'set' PW then 'specialty' 52* and 58*. The 52* gap wedge is used for full shots and lots of chips/pitches around the green. I open it, hood it, etc. and think the Vokey is more versatile than a matching CB wedge would be.

I think it depends on whst your doing with said wedge. If its used as mostly a full swing club, then set gw, if you are using it more around the green, wedge gw

I just got the Glide 2.0 50 to go with my 56 and 60. I have the i200 UW as well and will do some testing. Though I can hit partial shots with the UW I feel the specialty will be more precise for inside of 100 yards. I'd just go with a more friendly wedge like the Glide if you're going to forego the set one.

Came on here thinking, I commented on this a few days ago, realised that it's just another thread on the same thing!

I originally had my G400s to PW (44.5*) and bought a Ping Glide 2.0 50*. Unfortunately there was a 30 yard gap between them which isn’t ideal.

So, got the UW to match and it’s great, same feel and good gapping as my set. I only ever use it for full shots.

I swapped the Ping Glide for a 52* Cleveland which is better for my game, and I use this for full shots and pretty much all pitches and chips within 100 yards in the winter. When the ground’s harder I use my Callaway wedges more from close in. But if I were you I’d go with the set gap wedge and then work out what you need underneath that.

I have both, definitely find the st Gap to be better for me than a 50° vokey

Another reason I switched was, that my (maybe) next iron set won't have a GW.

Matching gap wedge. You will presumeably have your irons for a bit, see how the GW works out. Maybe you buy a specialty GW when you replace your wedges down the round for comparison purposes.

Vokey starts at 50 for me
