Is Florida Golf Windy?

WidespreadPanic

Recommended Posts

I am moving to Indian Harbour Beach (Melbourne) in a couple months, and I’m currently testing new sets of irons. Is golf windy in Florida? I’ve played down there before, mostly in the summer and I just can’t remember the conditions aside from one round on a course than ran along the waterway (very windy). All things being static, I could use some more height on my irons, but if I’m going to be constantly playing in windy conditions then I’d hesitate on that.

We pray for wind all summer when golfing to keep the gnats away. Then pray for it to go away on boating days. Never happy. Im south and west of there but have spent time in Melbourne. You should be enjoying pretty steady breezes but not Texas or Oklahoma type sustained wind. The wind over the winter months will be N and NE and blow till spring between 7 and 18 kt. You may have a two club wind on some days but not the norm.

I suppose the WRX answer is buy the irons you want to get the shot you want in normal conditions and learn to flight the ball. I cant, I just club up or aim over and hope for the best.

Ever been to a Panic show at Red Rocks?

it was windy two days ago- kicked my a**-

Yeah I was gonna say, its not just in spring. As the cold fronts in Fall move down from the northern USA, we get LOTS of stiffly winded days but it's really enough to count on your hands.

I moved to Melbourne 2 years ago. There is a steady wind usually from Nov-March blowing offshore when its cold out. In general I'd say if its cold its windy if its hot there's no wind. Cold (for Florida) is only with cold fronts like Oct-March ish. In the summer there is rarely a strong breeze but even so the warm breeze doesn't seem to move the ball as bad as cold wind. Some afternoons if the evening will be chilly you'll pick up a offshore breeze. Or a tropical system is blowing through.

Typically the shrubbery is thick so shots low to the ground don't move much, but get up above the tree canopy and the ball gets blown around. We don't have many courses west of I95 here either so a lot of courses are near the water and get even more wind than say Harmony would over near Kissimmie. Indian Harbour, unless you join a private club, you'll be playing where I play mostly, Baytree, Duran, Viera East, Spessard Holland, Crane Creek, Mallards Landing, maybe Habitat, maybe Savannahs in Merritt Island. Not much to offer in Melbourne. Everything is flat and susceptible to wind.

Not sure where you're coming from. DC? I grew up in Ohio and moved to L.A. Windy days here remind me of a cold front from Ohio. Not much change in direction, just constant one-direction wind. Similar to L.A., wind in FL is as strong as the afternoon breeze in Los Angeles near the coast. But its not as strong as say Palm Springs near the I10.

To me though, the wind was familiar and I know how to deal with it. its the Bermuda chipping that wrecked my game for over a year when i got here. I'm still re-learning my short game here. I'd take L.A.'s Kikuyu over this Bermuda business.

A little off topic, but curious what the shape of the Savannah’s is in since the county dropped it?

Just purchased a condo in Cape Canaveral and planning to play in January.

I haven't played Savannahs. My buddy and I went up after Hurricane Irma and it was under 2 feet of water. But Brevard also sold Habitat and Spessard Holland. Ive played Habitat twice since it sold and IMO its getting progressively better. The proshop has goods for sale for once and the maintenance seems to have improved.

Just curious if you know who the county sold them to? I knew it was integrity/celebration golf management (I was a part of those clowns when I was in Orlando) but then I heard that one of the general managers of CGM is wanted, and that they basically voided their contract with the county? Heard that through a vendor.

I played Duran years ago in a 5 club wind. One of the guys in my foursome had made the final 64 at the US Am and shot 80. It was quite a day

Sea level, wet, cooler, ocean zephyrs ... ball (NOT) go far. I see this in the Panhandle where I winter up near PCB / Destin as well

I have meetings every year in Orlando in late February/early March. I can't remember ever being there that time of year when there wasn't at least a day or two with 20 mph winds.

Depends on where you are and in particular what time of the year.

If you're within 5 miles of the coast, it gets breezy. It's not West Texas windy, but you'll consistently see winds of 20-30 mph. Probably won't get above that though.

If you're further inland, it's usually not very breezy.

And it gets more breezy everywhere in Florida from January to March. And the further you go south the more windy it tends to get.

I live in Citrus County half the year and it's only windy on windy days. :taunt:

Seriously, the closer you get to the Atantic or Gulf coasts, the more frequent and severe are the wind conditions. Our area is about 15 miles inland from the Gulf side and we do not have much wind at all.

Wow, some of us are spoiled here in Florida. Yes, there are windy days, particularly in the winter with prevailing NE winds (which are damp and nasty when you're near the coast). Rarely, however, between April and October will you have a day where you can say the winds affected your game. Absent a tropical storm offshore or approaching hurricane, you'll almost never have winds exceeding 20mph (last Friday was an exception, that was a tough day!). 90% of the time, the most you'll have to make is a one club adjustment.

County commissioners have approved a 49-month agreement with a new nonprofit organization of local residents called Golf Brevard Inc. to operate The Habitat and Spessard Holland, effective Sept. 1.

I’ve been here for a month and have yet to play a round where wind didn’t effect club choices. Some days are worse than others though. I’ve played Viera East, Duran, Harmony, Spessard, Baytree, Habitat. Different from what most people say around here, I think I liked Viera East the best. It was definitely the toughest of the bunch between the wind and the slopey fast greens.

It's windy in March, thus your experience thus far.

As others have said, it's normally not windy - inland it's too still for many as it gets hot. Only during the cold fronts (and warm) does it get windy generally. The front come thru usually spaced far apart in the fall, as it cools (and not fast or often enough for many, cause like I said, it's hot!). But springtime seems like it's windy for a month or so straight (usually March). Then things settle down.
