Shaft filled w sand - why ?

went to the shop to have an iron shaft swapped out.

set of very fine Laser FX2's was missing a five iron, these have R300 regulars.

located a Wilson Staff five with a Firestick 2.8 Stiff that was heavy and swung like rebar.

the heads are very similar in shape and configuration so ---- why not try and complete this nice old set.

found a Titleist DCI with matching R300 shaft to swap with.

Alex at CC Deerfield, nicest guy in town, IMHO, took the time to do this job while I waited.

the Wilson head took three minutes of torching to get loose, unusually long time.

before he pulled the head, he noted how heavy it was. weighed it out at 650 grams.

once the head was off of the Wilson, he poured out a pile of sand. the whole shaft had been filled with it.

no corks or plugs.

we were equally surprised.

is this something any members have experienced ?

That's pretty good insight! I would never have imagined that on my on, but now that you bring it up it makes perfect sense.

thats exactly right. Some will put sand in, then use it as a tempo trainer. they backswing, wait till they feel the sand settle towards the grip at the top of the swing, and then start downswing. forces a slower back swing and cleaner transition (in theory).

thats exactly right. Some will put sand in, then use it as a tempo trainer. they backswing, wait till they feel the sand settle towards the grip at the top of the swing, and then start downswing. forces a slower back swing and cleaner transition (in theory).

Not quite what he is saying. The entire shaft was filled 100%. It’s just to make it heavy. I made one just like it 25 years ago as a strength training tool.

It’s a bit like the swingspeed sticks today. Swing a much heavier club over and over again and when you pick up a standard one you can swing it much faster.
