Best player CBs to pair with blades.

I've been playing the ping s55's for the past few years and have loved the club heads, but I need to get new shafts in them. I figured if I needed to uprade the shafts it might be worth it to just upgrade my irons. I love the extra forgiveness in my 4 and 5 irons, but would love to play blades in my short irons for the feel, workability, and lower flight.

I've looked at the callaway, titliest, Mizuno and Taylormade muscle backs and they all seemed pretty similar to me, but I want to have a cavity back similar to my s55's in my long irons to help with forgiveness. Because the mb's are similar I'll probably make my decision based on which CBs I like the most.

In my CBs I'm looking for that extra forgiveness without a huge jump in distance or lofts. Has anyone done a combo set that's really liked it? Are there any CB's that work great as a combo with muscle backs?

There's lots of good choices out there. Titleist works well, especially in something like AP2 in 3, CB in 4 and 5, and MB 6-9 or P. Mizuno works well going with MP18 MMC 3, MP18 SC 4 and 5, and MP 18 MB in 6-9 or P. Call away is a solid option as well going with X-forged 3, Apex Pro 4 and 5, and Apex MB 6-9 or P.

If your dead set on new clubs go for it. Any of the provious posts will do it.

Imo, your s55 are some of the better cb for combo sets out there. I think Austin cook used this year? With success?

Combo that with some i blades and you got a pretty dope combo set

If you can still find them new, the Srixon 765 & 965 transition seamlessly

Definitely these and both offer a ton of forgiveness... You can sometimes even find the 745/945 combos if you look around. Super forgiving clubs with a great player look and the lofts do not jump like crazy.

Titleist TSr2 10*  GD UB 6s

Yeah I wish Ping offered a true blade. I probably would go with an s55/blade combo. The iblade are really just new versions of the s55 so I'm not sure it'd make sense to put them together.

oh gotcha. yea that doesnt make sense.

im enjoying my combo, p790 4 iron and p730 the rest. played mp-h5/mp5, that was a great combo.

id agree with second post that the cobra combos look pretty sexy, specially the black (dunno how long that would last, but still clean). Hit really well for me as well, the blades felt similar to my mp5s(bit o forgiveness)

Some models of irons come "pre-blended."

For example, the pre-P700 series TaylorMade irons models started splitting out their head designs to enhance launch in longer irons and control in short irons. I'll use the SLDR and RSi family since I'm most familiar with them:

The SLDR irons had a speed pocket behind the face and a Thru-Slot (polymer-filled) in the sole of the 3i through 7i. In 8i on up, the Thru Slot disappears and the speed slot gets smaller.

In the follow-on PSi irons, the 3i-5i had tungsten weights in the toes, 6i-7i no tungsten; for 8i on up, same adjustments as SLDR.

Through the years, Titleist had delivered iron models with decidedly different head designs, as you move from long iron to short iron.

Lately, the revived Hogan irons have the linear vertical center of gravity (Linear CG) to mitigate thinning in the long irons, and ballooning in the short irons.

Given recent club design enhancements, I'm not sure how much benefit this blending delivers for non-tournament golfers, other than psychological "feel good."

If you look at the bridgestone japan bs-golf.com website they have a combo set that gradually morphs from cb to mb called the tour x-bl which could be what you are looking for. Their models usually start in japan and move to the u.s. the following year. No word yet about this model from Bridgestone U.S. but they are in some stores in the u.s. that brought them in from japan.
