2019 Wilson Duo Professional vs TM balls - quick Trackman test

Recommended Posts

I had a two hour TM4 session tonight and took some time at the end to get some quick comparison numbers in with a few clubs. Overall, the Duo Pro feels great. I played the original Duo for a couple seasons and this ball does not feel mushy *at all* like the Duo did. Softer for sure but not at all like the Duo. Really felt great.

The matte yellow is a great color but the one thing I noticed is that it seems to really pick up marks more than I would have expected. Cleaned up fine though. And to be fair, under normal playing conditions, it would have been getting cleaned once per hole vs just getting wailed on for 50 shots or so.

For comparison sake, the balls in my shag bag are TM balls from the past few years, TP5x, Tour Preferred X and Lethals all in very good condition. No, they are all not the same, so I guess take the TM #s for what they are but they are all high end TM balls in great condition.

Clubs used: 60* hi toe/partial wedge shot. Cobra one length 9 iron, Steelfiber 110 stiffs. M3 driver, 9.5* ADDI black 6x.

Took ~10 shots with each club per ball. Rotated 5-5 then 5-5 again so I wasnt taking 10 in a row with one ball. Deleted any obvious skulls.

Gotta say, the numbers are much much closer than I would have thought. I used the metal dots on both balls and the spin numbers were comparable. I initially *thought* that the Duo felt a little dead on the driver but the numbers seemed to stay consistent.

Definitely will be testing this ball more throughout the winter.

What did your ballspeed numbers look like?

Sorry I wasnt writing those down for each block. Although with the driver I know they were mostly @ 158-160.

Um, ok. Am I missing the joke here?

I guess you have not seen the gx7 commercials on the golf channel.

dc I think trackcoach was just messin' with you and trying to have a little fun. I don't think he was trying to say you were a honk for the ball or anything. I kinda chuckled because I remember that guy from the GX-7 commercials.

Anyway glad to hear they don't feel as mushy as the original Duo. I know some people liked the originals but they were not for me at all. One thing that stuck out a little there was the peak height on the Duo was higher on the wedge and 9i, quite a bit on the wedge. Not sure how I would like that component. I like the flight down a little lower with wedges like a lot of folks. But thanks for the info!

If you read my review in the other thread you would know I had similar thoughts as you. My post had nothing to do with your insights, if it did I would have quoted them. I was just having some fun with my own insights. Rather than repeat what I said in the other thread, I did it gx7 style here. BTW, it is actually a really good ball. The only negative I found was with the matte version picking up a lot of dirt.

Why don't they have the FG Tour anymore? That was a great ball.

Is the Duo Pro anything like it?

They still make the FG Tour, it's $45/dozen. It's a great ball and of all the tour balls I've played, it's my favorite. The Duo Pro is a replacement for the Duo Urethane, which is a level below a tour ball. It competes with the Srixon Q-Star Tour, Project (a), KSig-3, and to a lesser extent the direct to consumer tour level balls.

I have not yet played the Duo Pro, but the Duo U was pretty similar to the FG Tour. The Duo felt marginally softer off short irons, wedges and the putter. It also launched a little higher and probably went a couple yards further off long irons. It spun slightly less around the green. But all of that was pretty marginal, I'm not sure I could be able to id them blind.

Just picked up a box of the matte yellows to give them a spin. It’s a great looking ball in hand. Looking forward to some on course reviews. BB

Curious, why isn't the Duo Pro considered a "tour" ball? Are the Snell balls(Black and X) considered tour balls?

Because Wilson makes a ball a level above the Duo Pro, the FG Tour.

What about the ball makes it a "tour" ball vs not? There are 3 piece tour balls, Pro V1. I believe the ChromeSoft was a 3 piece in the past. Snell balls are 3 piece.

Generally it's either a ball that is played on tour or a ball designed to be competitive with those balls. The Q-Star Tour, Duo Pro, Taylormade Project(a), and balls like that are not played on tour and have trade offs against the balls that are.

Not only do the matte balls pick up marks they pick up dirt as well, way more than a standard finish ball. Also if there’s any moisture on the ground clumps of mud stick to it more noticeably than a standard finish ball. They look cool but there are definitely downsides.

Negative. Since the demise of the wound ball on tour (which at that point mainly had urethane covers), “Tour” is classified as a multilayer, solid core ball with a urethane cover. Tour usage has little to do with the differences in characteristics of balls with this construction and has more to do with $$$.
