What should my "Vanity set" be ?

Lancj1

Recommended Posts

I am fully fitted into my set. G400 Driver to LW, with a couple of Glides 54/58, several hybrids 2/3/4/5 and a Stretch 3 wood - that I rotate in and out as I feel.

I am after a vanity set of irons, that I can experiment with. I'm ignoring / acknowledging I may or may not be able to hit them as well as the Pings, but I want to give better players irons a go. I hesitate to use the "B" word. I will get fitted and will explain exactly what I am doing to the fitter so that they don't keep pointing me to the club type I am already equipped with.

What would you get in these circumstances ?

I would look for irons that you might be able to combo with your G400's. Your G400 long irons are going to be way easier to hit than your "vanity" ones. So start by only switching out the PW and 9-iron and see how that goes. As you improve you can then slowly start switching out the longer irons.. That way, as you progress as a ball striker your set can naturally evolve with you.

True vanity, and only top end: Miura Baby Blades or a full set by Honma.

If you are looking for vanity, like a vanity handicap, pick a smaller driver either sub 440cc or Persimmon. Irons need to be players blades, but not necessarily long hozel old stuff. The Mizuno MP 4s or set of Titleist MBs can be had pretty cheaply. Only carry up to a 56 wedge, old school guys grew up with this loft only and vanity would demand you use all the shots without the hassle of a LW.

Cameron, Lajosi, Bettinadi, etc custom milled to your specs putter that will cost $3K but not work any better than a less than $100 unit at a big box. Unless you want to go old Achusnet Bullseye and be a total badWord not allowed.

Have fun always!!

Obviously being a Ping fan I would go i200's or i210's.

I have some Ping SGI's for the long irons and switch out the 8,9,pw for something more fun to experiment with.

My i200 short irons have decent forgiveness with the lower offset I prefer.

Just got some Pxg, 0311's late in the fall, I'm not one for vanity but I love the look and feel of those. Just a touch larger than my i200's. The 5 iron in these might be my favourite of the set.

Prices have come down on these so getting a set to try out isn't out of the question for the average Joe at the moment.

I buy all my clubs based on looks. In terms of performance, I don't notice much difference between the the majority of stuff out there. Sure, a 9 iron hybridish thing and a tiny mb 9 iron will be quite different. But among the pack, its all the same. Shaft weight and length on irons as well as correct lie angle are important to me. Other than that, i can make anything work. My grandma made a set of king cobra ladies CB style blades work in the 90s, cuz thats all they made. Your grandparents played persimmons and blades and had fun too.

I usually end up with stuff from titleist and recently ping due to thier classic looks. I have a soft spot for cobra bladed irons for some reason (grandma).

I usually buy something like the following:

1) a smaller 440 cc or classic shaped driver like a titleist D3.

2) some kind of classic lookinf CB blades.

3) any old 2 or 4 hybrid. I like the way the ping G looks with its matte finish and blue stripes.

4) cleveland or cobra wedges. Cuz vokeys are too damn expensive.

5) any old 3 wood

Before spending a boatload of cash on a full set, buy a few used 6-irons of different designs (MB, players CB, square toe, V-sole, etc). Each one will cost you $20-$30 online. Try to keep the shaft similar (easier said than done) to take that variable out of the equation. I've done that recently just for fun. In fact, I was cleaning up my garage yesterday and found some leftover solo 6-irons from my experiment.
