Hi WRX'ers,

I currently live in Denver, but will be traveling weekly to KC next year for work. I will likely be there M-Thurs, but will be there a few weekends for play. My work is downtown (Campbell and 18th) and I am looking for an apartment or Airbnb at the moment.

Do you recommend a club or facility I could join during the week and leave a set of clubs? I will probably be practicing a few evenings/nights during the week, so a launch monitor would be a bonus, but a nice practice facility with lights on in the season is ideal. I should be able to do a 9 hole league during the week as well. I need it to be affordable since I will have two rents.....etc.

I could live anywhere in in the area that has easy access to downtown. The most logical one I found is Tiffany Greens since it is on the way to the airport, but I could also live more south of town since they seem to have an abundance of courses. From what I have read, most WRX'ers say stay away from GreatLIFE. Is this still the case? I like the fact they have a gym and price is crazy low, but if there are service and maintenance horrors, I would rather hit up a muni or low-key semi-private facility.

I know this request is broad, but I do have the opportunity to locate any part of town that isn't too far away from downtown and MCI. Do you have any suggestions for a facility to call home?

Ideal benefits: (Not a deal breaker though)

  • Weekly membership (low cost that doesn't include weekends ; unless it is low for total membership. <$150 monthly)
  • Storage facility for clubs
  • decent practice facility with unlimited balls
  • Bonus: Launch monitor for winter
  • 9 hole weekly league with great people

Prices seem to be much cheaper than Denver, so I am dropping my Denver membership and will try to practice during week with occasional play. I am not sure how intensive my weekly schedule will be, so there are inherit risk. I think this will be a great opportunity to practice this year and try to get near scratch!!!

Thank you!!!!!

Are you under 40? If so, Tiffany Greens has a great young professional membership for $150 per month that is unlimited anytime with cart and unlimited range. You may even be able to negotiate a little lower since you don't plan to play weekends. I started last year at GreatLife and got out and went back to TG. I would strongly advise against GL. It sounds too good to be true because it is.

TG does store your clubs, great practice facility and a great men's league on Thursday nights. In addition, it's much easier to get to downtown from the Northland than from south (like Overland Park) if you're wanting to live closer to the course.

Another course I've been a member of was Falcon Lakes. Great option for a weekday plan but it might be a little further out than you'd like. I actually live near this course and it's about 25 minutes to downtown so not too bad. They have a weekday membership for $1,600 paid upfront. I'm honestly not sure if they do club storage (I don't think they do) but they have a good men's league, nice practice facility and a very nice layout that is always in great shape (I'd say better than TG overall but they're both good in this regard). Once again, traffic is better in this direction than south.

Let me know if you have other questions.

This information is invaluable. Thank you very much for the input. I just turned 40 a few months ago, so I may still have a chance for the TG's rate if I request a weekly plan. But, Falcon Lakes also has a twilight for only 1k..... That might be hard to beat!

I am so glad to hear your thoughts on lighter traffic on the Northside and West. I would rather drive 30 minutes moving than spend 15 minutes in traffic!!!!! If I typically get out of work around 5 I should be able to hit up either facility for a quick 9 or practice session.

Thanks again!!!!

If that twilight plan works for your needs, that will absolutely be hard to beat in the area. Falcon Lakes is a fantastic course IMO and I'd be there instead of TG if they had a young professional type membership plan. Granted it's 10 mins from my house versus 20 mins for TG, but I'd still probably choose FL honestly if they were the same distance. However, if you like playing a course with lots of water, TG would be your choice haha.

I'm not as familiar with TG, but Falcon Lakes is a quality setup. If it was a little closer to my house/office, I would have joined there years ago. I think it is one of the better public options in town and always in good shape. But it is about 25-30 minutes from Downtown KC and MCI mostly highway; TG would be a lot more conveniently located for you.

I just inquired with TG and FL. Thank you guys for the pertinent information. Now, if I can find an apartment or AirBnB in the middle of downtown and one of these courses, I am golden!

I am not sure whenever season begins in Kansas/MO, but I would love to buy you guys a round whenever the sun comes out.

Searching on Google Maps, I noticed two more courses a tad closer. Deuce at National and Sunflower Hills. Are they worth vetting or should I stick with TG and FL? I also see Painted Hills, but it is owned by WorstLIFE.

Email is [email protected]. Would love to keep in touch.

Thanks again!

Trent

Our season is year-round here (at least for me it is). Depends on what kind of weather you are willing to play in. I'm one of those crazies who's out there if I have some free time and it's above freezing and not too windy.

Both of those courses have things about them that I don't like all that much. Sunflower is just boring to me and it's a muni so not quite as nice. The Duece is very gimmicky and short. You'd also have a hard time getting a membership under $150 I believe as it's technically private (loosely private these days I believe as they have GolfNow deals). Painted Hills is GL and it's garbage IMO (I played there a bit earlier this year as it is the closest GL course to my house and it worked when I was limited on time).

I will have to put in my 2 cents and say I like Falcon Lakes better than TG, and I know many of the members there. TG got a little beat up and wasn't in as good of shape the last couple of years. Full disclosure, I play on Falcon's KC Cup team, so I may be a little bias.... and to Q -- come on and join my friend, we need some A players on the team!

I forgot add, usually Saturday mornings there is a $ game, its not a lot, just $25-30 a man last year. Pays ctp on 3's and winning team. Pretty fun, they try and keep the teams even. They were messing with other formats near the end of last year.

Anyone know of any good simulators open to the public around OP?

I'm not aware of any simulators. OP Lady Sykes does have a great indoor practice setup, but it is just 8 netted hitting bays.
