Nike...will they ever put a putter in Tiger's bag?

Just a thought when replying to another thread. Nike has never been able to get Tiger's Newport 2 out of his bag. They have seemed content with making average putters at best, but tried to step it up with the Unitized series. I tend to think the Unitized putters were more gimmick than substance, but if Nike went to a well known putter designer, would Tiger switch? Tiger is very particular with his sticks and the flat one is probably the most important one to him, but I think Nike could hire a craftsman to work with Tiger and the rest (cameron) would be putter history (not really, but would be a big blow to Titleist). Any other opinions?

Well, we know from pictures and insight that Tiger tries everything that nike (or any other company) puts out. However, I don't think Nike will do it. The unitized series was good, but that NP2 has put alot of money in Tiger's bag, and I don't see things suck as Nike's OZ lines or the IC's replacing it.

I think Nike has made some quality putters in the past, but none compare to what SC puts out there for tour players. If Nike wanted to match the quality of a Cameron putter, they definitely have the money to do it. But as far as Tiger's golf game, I think him playing the Scotty is him paying homage to what has made him so much money during his career. Why fix what isn't broken?

At this point I don't think the fact that Scotty Cameron made the putter means much to him. He won't change putters not because Scotty Cameron made it but because Tiger has become very comfortable with it and obviously it has made a lot of money for him.

I guess it wouldn't surprise me if one year he came out with the same putter but it had the Titleist welded over and NIKE stamped in the cavity. Many baseball players have switched glove companies and just had a new label sewed on their trusted gamer.

I guess that is my point. Nike could go out and throw some $$$ at a master craftsman or even Cameron himself (although I don't think that would happen). I know Tiger has won a lot of $$$ with the Cameron, but he has changed everything else (driver, ball, coach, etc). Never say never, because if it ever means enough to Nike, it will be done.

Why would you jinx what is working??? He has won all of his tour victories with a Scotty. Why rock the boat?? Maybe he feels if he changes he might make a huge mistake and that is it. I have no idea what his mindset is. Bottom line.....he has a crap load of victories with Scotties and unless there is massive incentive for him to change.....why would you??

I don't see why Nike doesn't just make a copy of Tiger's putter. I mean we all know Scotty C. stole his ideas from Ping, so what's the big deal...

Nike could create a new putter with the exact specifications of Tiger's current putter. However, it seems clear to me Tiger doesn't want an exact copy, he wants what he's already used because it works. The only way I could see him changing is if his current putter is lost or stolen.

Tiger is not going to change putters.

Tiger has stated on multiple occasions that there are other putters out there that put a good roll on the ball for him - as good or better than what he has. He trusts his putter. It has won a lot for him and come through when it has needed to. Tiger doesn't care that Scotty made it, that it is a Ping Anser (as are many other great putters), that it is GSS or that it has cherry dots. He trusts it, and athletes are a notoriously superstitious lot.

As for making exact copies, Scotty Cameron has yet to create another putter that feels the same to Tiger. If Cameron can't do it, no amount of money is going to get it done. Tiger will not allow his putter to be welded or stamped, you can bet on that as well. No amount of money will get Tiger to change his mind either - do you believe at this point in his career money carries much weight?

i believe Nike (and many other companies) have made exact copies. tiger has tried them, i believe he even went to say that some had better feel his cameron. but like others have said, he trusts his putter. when it comes to tigers putter, nothing is goin to change. i also heard that cameron made him a backup putter and tiger looked down on it and said the sitedot was either to small or to big. scotty measured it and it was either 1/32 off or 1/64 of and inch off.

Think the article posted tells the story. His backup is a Nike, not a Cameron.

His back-up is irrelevant.

His back-up could be a brick on a stick because he'll never play it. I can't imagine any reason Tiger would go to his back-up for all the reasons that have already been posted. That's the whole point.

It is lip service to Nike. Nothing more. The Cameron is not going anywhere.

As of today it's in the bag. Correct. But, no one is a mind reader 5 years down the road. Nicklaus didn't win every major with the Low Wizard 600. But a majority of them.

While nobody knows what is down the road, given today's state of affairs if, and that is really a big if, Tiger replaces his Scotty, it won't be with a Nike. What his "back-up" is now is irrelevant.
