Houston Golf - Gus Wortham Park Golf Course

Has anyone had a chance to play the newly renovated Gus Wortham Park Golf Course?

https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/houston/article/Tee-up-Historic-Gus-Wortham-Park-Golf-Course-13302134.php

I played in probably 10-15 times a few years back before they closed it but haven't been back since the reopening in October. What is new? Layout / par changes? Conditions?

I played it for the re-opening day tournament and it was in great condition. The layout didn’t change and it doesn’t play long, but some holes you have to think through. I haven’t been back out there since, but got an AM tee time Sunday so I’ll update after.

We all better get used to playing it and elsewhere though because I’m pretty sure the vote is gonna go through to move the Houston open to Memorial. They will close Memorial for most of the year to renovate if that is the case.

It's definitely worth what they are charging and a nice addition to the Houston public courses. Close to the city and in decent shape the 4 or 5 times I have played since it re-opened.

I would agree that the greens are pretty firm and sand a little soft at the moment, but both of those should get better over time. If you play on weekends, be prepared for the typical slow public course round.

Played Gus a couple of weeks back for the first time in maybe 15 or more years. Very green, nice cart paths. They added some natural areas, added bunkering and some mounding. Look is nice. Greens are still hard and not super receptive. Still the same routing as before. Only real complaint i had was on a couple of holes they had cut down some small brush in the rough and left stumps a couple of inches high. Errant shots there could leave you with unplayable lies and would not be surprised if they don't have some cart tires punctured by idiots driving in the rough and not paying attention. I would play it again. Finally after all these years, they have an irrigation system which will help the course immensely.

Played GW this morning. First time since the renovation. I had played it once or twice many years ago. Teed off at 7:40 with a foursome including one walker. Finished four hours later.

Fun course in good shape with lots of undulation. 6400 yards from the back tees with five long holes (three par fours and two par threes). Par 71 with a course rating of 71.2 and a slope of 126 from the back tees.

Drinking water was plentiful. Golf shop is located in a temporary shack. No food options, so bring a snack.

I'm sure I will return. With Blackhorse, Cypresswood Tradition and the new Memorial Park to go with Gus Wortham, Houston golfers have some nice public options.

When we played it a couple of months ago, there was a taco truck at the turn between 9 green and 10 tee. It wasn't the fastest turnaround, but seemingly everyone stopped there so it didn't hold anything up.

The tacos were good, but the quesadillas were phenomenal!

I've played Gus several times in August and September. My admiration for the layout and condition remains unchanged. The "Harold's" food truck is hit or miss. Sometimes it's open. Sometimes it's not. If open, they do have a call ahead menu posted on the 9th tee.

I've been going to the Whataburger around the corner, either for a pre-round breakfast taquito or a post-round burger. I've also been bringing gatorade for calorie and electrolyte replacement.

Among others, I've played out there with a doctor, a restaurant owner, a retired fire chief, a lawyer (who played college golf at Rice) and a NASA engineer (who played college golf at Rice).

It will be interesting to see how the reopening of Memorial will affect the number of rounds played at Gus.

Played it for the first time since the redo this morning. As you can imagine it was a little soggy, but the course still played pretty good. They pushed the tee boxes up on 7 and 18 due to the fairways taking a lot of water this last week. 7 was actually playing as a Par 3. Going to be interesting how the city plays it for the AM next week. The undulating greens were my favorite part and will be a challenge if you're not a good putter. The constant honking of horns, revving engines and comments coming from cars while you're swinging on the front 9 is something you need to expect. Actually funny after a while.

On the weekends, they have barbacoa tacos but ONLY on the weekends. Disappointing because the barbacoa was twice as good as their regular tacos. And, they don't ever seem to be open early.
