1/4 inch gap on irons?

Sorry if this has been talked about before but I am wondering about this concept. In a half move toward OL irons, has anyone ever reshafted their irons with 1/4 inch gaps as opposed to 1/2 inch. Putting new shafts into my i200s and thought it may be the time to experiment. Thanks in advance. MJS

Been talked about lots of times. Most people go with 3/8 inch so the swingweight changes aren’t so big.

It also is important at what length you “start”. Is your 4 standard and then decreasing 1/4 inch per club? If so your wedges will be quite long and the SW will be quite high.

If you “start” with standard wedges and increase 1/4 inch per club your long irons will be pretty short and a very light swingweight.

I dont want to get too confusing, but taper tip shafts are also made specifically for 1/2 inch length changes per club to keep the flex consistent between clubs.

You could ream out your hosels and use .370 Unitized shafts and tip trim them in 1/4 inch increments instead of the standard 1/2 inch increments to solve that issue.

Summary. It’s more complicated than most people think to do it correctly.

Thanks for the reply. Going to start at the 6 so not much difference in mid irons but wedges will end up long. I hit some OL wedges last week though and I have to say the longer length in the wedges felt great.

Ah. Then your 5 and 4 will be a touch light. Some lead tape will fix that.

Your 7,8,9, wedges will be a bit heavy. Either live with it or take a grinder or belt sander to them and lighten them.

Since the are ping you could actually send them in and they could mess with the tuning port and lighten them a certain amount.
