Roast My Swing (Two Monte lessons later)

Moshjean

Recommended Posts

After two sessions with Monte I finally feel like my game is turning a corner. Definitely plan on sticking with him for the long run, and hopefully this video encourages others two make the leap for lessons.

Still not perfect but hopefully moving in the right direction .

Update 8/2

Hitting the ball pretty well and taking shallower divots. Definitely feel like my swing is getting better. Here’s a full speed swing from yesterday.

After a stretch of great golf (for me), my swing has gone to pot.

Feeling rushed at the top, too much forward bend, steep and hitting the ball all over the face (losing distance and dispersion)

Messaged Monte to get a lesson ASAP but open to hearing pointers while I wait to see him.

7 iron DTL

7 iron DTL Slow Motion

That’s your P6 in the downswing which is a good save from your very flat takeaway in fact you probably need that position in your backswing ie club pretty much covering your hands. If you’re seeing monte soon I wouldn’t bother with any changes tbh as you will no doubt need to change them anyhow but you do get the clubhead way behind the hands in the backswing.

If he tells you how to get into that P6 position with hips and chest more open and a bonus of a bowed left wrist let me know cause i can’t do it.

Good luck.

Your hands work out (away from you) on backswing, and the club works behind you. Keep the hands in and get the club going up.

Thank you, pure laziness on my part. Outside takeaway is something I’ve been fighting forever. I definitely need my hands staying the same distance from my body at address through the takeaway and early back swing

Practise "feeling" your hand path coming over your right foot in the takeaway, as close as you can to the right thigh. In conjunction *feel* like you have zero left arm rotation, like you are utterly hooding the face.

This should help work your hand path more inside and keep the head outside your hands.

Basically do the complete opposite of what you do now, hands inside, clubhead out.

Bull s****.

Don’t listen to this crap.

They’re talking about p6 and positions.

Good swings...more like good players...they don’t think about any of that nonsense. They have a feel that gets them into a cascade of positions.

All of those positions are a consequence of a natural swing.

You can’t contrive any of it.

You followed a swing thought that you picked up somewhere. Nobody would get into a position THAT flat without trying to manipulate the club.

Feel the weight of the club. Just let it fling around, getting to your right foot and then your left foot.

Abandon control. You’ll hit the ball just fine.

If you’re going to hit 1,500 balls a day like a tour pro, then by all means, work on some micro-moves.

If you are a 10-30 hcp like all of us, then just work on relaxing and let the club do what it does. That’s why most of the “non-pro experts” on this site are still going psycho about swing theory. They’re just trying to find something to hit the ball flush.

Jesus. Who peed in your corn flakes? Nothing wrong with trying to adjust a swing you aren’t happy with. If you’re happy being a 10-30, by all means continue. Doesn’t seem like OP is though.

I am going to follow your advice and hope I will become an 11 hcp as well.

Some good points in here, but my god, what a delivery. Bell end.

Pretty much what many people said -- pushing the hands out, which gets the club coming inside too much and flattens your shoulder plane. I fight this problem. I think this is a great video to help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeTLmGefShU.

When you do this drill, the club will feel like it's TOO steep. Good. Get used to the club shaft feeling light. You can really nip this problem with some reps.

Here's a good explanation by Manuel de La Torre. Go to 14:30 in the video and he talks about your swing specifically.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

*UPDATE*

Thank you for taking the time to watch my swing and share

I have a lesson scheduled with Monte this week, I'll post an update after

Tell him you want to start hitting up 5* on your driver.

That guy was worse than any of the Expert Village "experts". This video, with its "8-inch rule"... is perfect for the Expert Village curriculum:

**UPDATE 2/6**

After having to reschedule due to rain, I finally saw Monte for a lesson on 2/1.

He asked me what was going on with my game and had me warm up for a few minutes.

He pulled me aside and showed me a video of my swing and what I need to change.

We worked on some setup changes and some movements that felt absolutely ridiculous to me (like there was no way I could hit a golf ball from there)

It was seriously mind blowing seeing the before and after.

[/media]

Finally hitting the ball solid again (occasionally lol) and building some confidence in my game.

I have a TON of work to put in; however I’m confident that with Montes guidance I will get better.

For anyone on the fence, go see him! Seriously. Such a cool and knowledgeable guy. All of the quality free swing advice doesn’t compare to an hour lesson with him in person.

My favorite dialogue of the day was:

Me: “Monte it’s crazy that you knew all the changes I need to make after 5 minutes of warming up”

Monte: “I knew after one swing”

**Edit: Sorry for the camera work, the range was crowded and there wasn't much room for filming

That is seriously cool that you got a lesson from Monte. What type of movements did he have you do and how long did it take for you to start hitting it solid with the changes?

I live about 20 minutes away from where he teaches, so I'm disappointed I didn't see him sooner.

Setup was big, my stance was too narrow and my shoulders were super open at address.

After that it was all about trying to get my pelvis working over my left foot/towards the target in the backswing.

On the lesson tee out of 10 "This feels weird I think I might miss the ball" swings 3 or 4 were solid. Which surprised me.

Today I had a 2 hour range session practicing setup and movements before every swing.

I would say 50% were solid, 30% were playable, and 20% were burners or fat.
