Milwaukee CC is the best, but it is exclusive and a call from your pro likely won't help.

Blue Mound is really, really good. It's a cool Seth Raynor that Tom Doak's group has done work on.

Those are the two best by quite a bit.

Westmoor looks decent from the highway and isn't that far west of Miller Park.

The Wisconsin Club is solid. I haven't played Tuckaway.

Blue Mound and Milwaukee are definitely the top two, as stated. But if you can't manage either, Westmoor has always interested me. I'm a big Langford fan (Lawsonia Links is my favorite course in the state, and Spring Valley is an absolute blast regardless of the variable conditions). Apparently Westmoor shares a heavy Langford influence, as Langford himself redesigned 4 of the holes and then, during a renovation, another architect redesigned the other holes to better reflect the Langford influence. If you haven't ever played a Langford course, I would try to get on there just to experience it. Oh, and do yourself a favor and just drive up to Lawsonia the next day...

Not sure about westmore being a Langford course. It was completely redone by bob Lohmann. Ozaukee is a true Langford & Moreau just north of the city.

The West Bend CC (just outside the Milwaukee metro area) opened with 9 holes in 1930. They are a Langford & Moreau design. The second nine holes weren't constructed until 1960, although I do not know who did the design. One of the interesting things about the course is that the fairway bunkers are grass bunkers. Not sand.

While I like Blue Mound very much I would put Ozaukee CC ahead of it. Just personal preference. If you don't mind the drive, the Oconomowoc Country Club is a Donald Ross course. Not long at all, but very small greens and generally tight fairways. Your iron game needs to be spot on.

huskie,

I don't in any way mean to be argumentative, but there isn't enough info here to really help you. What is "close" to downtown? 20 minutes, 30, 45....? If you are a member of a truly A List club you have a shot at getting on Milwaukee CC, Ozaukee CC or Blue Mound. That assumes your pro has a pre-existing relationship or your pro agrees to do a return favor down the road. If not it won't happen. I have no idea what your connections might be. It might be best if you simply go to google maps, enter Milwaukee golf, visit some course web sites and come back with questions. There are a host of truly great muni's as well as CC's of various levels of exclusivity.

Pine Hills (just a few miles north of The Bull), West Bend CC and Oconomowoc CC are a couple of my favorite privates that rarely get mentioned. I am very fortunate to have work friends who are members at these and the ones above. Over the course of a summer we play a number of Home and Home rounds trading off hosting. The one I haven't ponied up for in a First Tee Fund raiser or found a trade to play is the Minocqua CC. It is suppose to be pretty special.

I've heard great things about Minocqua as well.

Last year, I looked on boxgroove.com just to see if they had a rate for Minocqua. I think it was $400 per round.

I see LaBelle is under new ownership. It has a LOT of features similar to Oconomowoc GC.
