Do you go golfing or do you play golf?

It's a slow morning and I haven't seen this debate on the forums for a while. How do you describe the action of playing the game of golf? Do you play golf or do you go golfing? I lean more towards saying that i "play golf" but I'm not a hater, though I recognize no one says, "I'm gonna go basketballing," though many people on the way to the rifle range will say they're off to go shooting. So WRXers, what's the proper description, and more importantly, what phrase do you usually use?

And yes, it's dumb question and there's no need to post a response if all you're going to say is that this a dumb question.

Not a dumb question, I’m sure there are opinions on the topic. Personally I don’t have a preference but I think I say “play golf” more often.
    Glove: ML
    Tees: 2 3/4
    Towel: white
    Repair tool: metal
Ball Marker: largest poker chip in the world
    Iron headcovers: wait, what?

    The feedback system is annoying

I do battle against the elements in a fight to death.
Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

When my wife asks if I'm going golfing, I tell her "I'm going to play golf". Saying "going golfing" just make's it sound like a frivolous activity to me, which I think we can all agree it is not.

Now that I think about it though, maybe it's the other way around. Hunting, fishing, working, etc. Those sound a little less frivolous than "playing a game". Hmm, maybe I need to rethink this.

Either, it doesn't matter to me, regardless of what other people think.

    Practice: Hit balls

    Play: Play golf

I have found, although probably just a coincidence, that those who use the term “going golfing” also have a proclivity to shellfish allergies, find Dennis Miller to be funny, are driven to tell you about their brother's golf game on the first tee.

Similar for me, I tell the wife I’m going to “hit a bucket of ball” or just simply “I’m going to play today”. She knows what it means.

If she brings it up though, she asks “are you going golfing today”?

"Play golf" for me. It's always been a pet peeve of mine to hear people say "golfing". I don't know why, but it is. I don't judge them for it at all, but I do cringe inside every time I hear it.

I tell people I play golf or are going to play golf. My wife tells people I'm going golfing and my co-workers sometimes ask if I am going golfing or went golfing.

Every time I see, 'My new weapons' when referring to someone's clubs I cringe so hard. There's no battle going on here folks.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

I'll admit, I've called them "tools", but never weapons.

I play golf. Some would argue I have no business in the attempt but I am out there never the less.

As someone else said, range = hit balls, actually [attempting to] play = play golf or just play. "Going to [insert course name] to play."
