Battle of the Driver Shafts

Chip2win

Recommended Posts

It's a battle of the titans to see who will survive and land a spot in my Epic SZ!

The data: SS = 105 mph with smooth action

Preferred ball flight: Baby draw

Preferred feel: I tend to like a weaker X flex that gives me some head feel, but not too much dispersion.

The contenders:

1. Fuji Atmos Blue 7X

2. Diamana BF 70 X

3. Graphite Design AD-DI 7X

4. Aldila Rogue Silver 70X

Are there other worthy contenders to consider? Thoughts on best fit?

I'm very similar to you and as mentioned by a previous poster I've found the Tour AD IZ to be ideal. Its stable without being the least bit boardy, launches easily without excessive spin, and the way the shaft loads so linearly makes it very user-friendly and easy to time compared to the DI which feels a tad looser and has a more pronounced kick.

USGA Index: ~0

Even though it’s not on the list, the AD-IZ is literally the best shaft I have played and am currently still playing. I have it paired in a 16’ M2 and it just feels amazing. The shaft loads amazing and does not feel whipping or boardy in anyway. Honestly the harder I swing the better it feels and is super stable. It does feel easy to launch but still maintains the proper spin. Strike and player dependent but it should be a contender also.

Those are all very good options you can't go wrong with any of them. If you can find an older matrix ozik tp7hd or 6hd it is one of the best feeling shafts made and the profile you seem to prefer. You can find them cheaper these days, these were one of the first shafts to use wire throughout the shaft.

My SS is slightly faster @108 with semi-aggressive transtion, used to game 70g pro orange in stiff but recently switched to 60g stiff and couldnt be happier. Picked up Some mph in speed (carry 265y)but the ball essentially fly very similarly. The 70g is now in my 3 wood and it just feels right there.

Pro orange might play stiffer to its flex, however, your SS with a smooth transition is probably better off with a 60g shaft in either stiff or X.

With 105Mph and also choosing 70-gram versions of those driver shafts I wouldn’t even consider X-flex. Look at Not allowed because of spam-review of AD DI or AD IZ and you will see that your swing speed fit into 6 stiff in both shafts.

Yah very interesting youre looking at the 7x versions.

With that speed and being smooth youd likely be a 6x or 7s. 7x likely a bit much.

Im about 107 to 110 with driver and much more aggressive downswing/transition. I usually look at 6x categories unless its a light 6 (thats around 60-62 grams)

My prefered driver weight is around 67-72grams.

Thanks guys! I love this site. I'm interested in the 70 gram versions because I like a slightly heavier feel...and I admit there could also be a bit of ego involved in my choice of an X. With that said, I'm currently gaming the Atmos 7X Black and I don't feel it's too much for me. It's not boardy or too hard to load. My only complaint is it tends to fly a bit too low.

I get why u want a 70 gram version.

But as a smooth swinger you dont put much load.

Look at 6x or 7s. 7x way too much. Thats why your flights soo low.

Remember most shafts get stiffer as you get heavier. A lot of 7s are as stiff if not stiffer then 6x

Also a lot of 6x are 67 to 71grams whereas the 7 is only around 72-76grams.

We have all of these shafts available for demo, and can send them direct to your door for you to try first hand (except the Atmos Blue)!

Why don't you try them all and let us know which one worked best for you?

I’ve bounced back and forth between x-stiff and stiff over the last couple years. Hzrdus Red turned my driver into a weapon. My ss is 110-115 and I play a 6.0 tipped an inch. I think I’ll order the m5 with a smoke in x-stiff just to have a couple options but both feel great.

The shafts are here! This is my first experience with shaftshack so I thought I would give my thoughts.

1. I was a little disappointed that the shafts measure 44 3/4 (playing length method). I've been using a driver at 45 1/2 so this feels really short. The whole point of this exercise was to try and find the shaft that was just the right amount of flex for me so it makes it harder to tell.

2. I was also a little disappointed that the shafts have a weird uni-fit type of hosel adapter. I was expecting the typical Callaway and it took me a while to figure this new one out.

3. However on the positive side, I took the AD-DI out on the course today and it may be the best feeling shaft I've ever hit! Its not the straightest shaft I've ever hit, but it feels like butter...if anything maybe a little too soft (at 6X).

More reviews to follow...

My experience with the DI is limited but the 6x felt very soft to me. If I recall, the knock on the 6 weight DI shaft is that it played soft to flex whereas the 7 played more true according to most of the members on here. Tons of old threads on that shaft though and you can do your own research and form your own opinion. I have a 70x in the rogue silver and I love it. My ss is around 108 for reference but I do have a more aggressive transition.

Update: Shaftshack hit me with a totally unwarranted $15 late fee. NOT HAPPY. Disreputable operation.

Details? Was your return late or not? From other complaints you’ve made about the whole process, it sounds like either you didn’t ask enough questions (i.e. shaft length, adapter, etc.) and if shaft shack is going to suggest to people “HEY, TRY US” then you owe it to your fellow members to let us know if there was a problem or not, especially when you toss out the claim, “Disreputable operation”

Why is this in deal or no deal?

Looks like because now ShaftShack is being called out by the OP. I’m not the least bit interested in his high priced shaft showdown, but I am interested in hearing the details of his interaction with this ShaftShack operation. It’s an interesting concept that I’d be extremely interested in trying if it was ran well and is not a company that will end up nickel and diming a good deal into one that turns surprisingly expensive.

*esit - I mean to say, I’m very interested in hearing more details about this deal. I’m suspicious we may not be getting all relevant details here.
