Stiff shafts from 1953 Top Flites 2-9

Recommended Posts

I am going to take these STIFF

shafts out of the 53 Top Flites and replace them with a set of A flex shafts and grips I have. Any one that wants them can have them for just the postage. Just pm me. Shafts only . Keeping the heads. Will try best to save the ferrules. attachment=4905576:E9F2DE1B-572A-473B-8F76-C560BB88FCB9.jpeg]

Richard. Had a set of Spalding's with the marbleized ferrules similar to yours. A trick I use to save ferrules. Heat up a pot of water to boiling, sufficient to fully submerge the ferrule. Take off the burner, submerge the head in the water for 10 seconds. Then using a piece of rubber grip to grab hold of the ferrule, should slide up the shaft. At least .5", 1" is better. Repeat for a bit longer if unsuccessful on first attempt. Wrap the ferrule with a damp piece of rag when applying heat to the hosel for extra protection. Use a torch, not a heat gun. Better control of pinpointing the heat.

Don't remember if they had pinned hosels. If pinned, may be more trouble then the shafts are worth to try and save them. Chopping the shaft and drilling out the pin (down the hosel) is a whole lot less work. These older irons may have tip sizes different than the customary .355/.370 of modern shafts. May want to verify sizing before proceeding to deeply into the project. Non-standard, you're likely faced with a bore ream to get more contemporary shafts to fit. Perhaps someone will confirm tip size upon reading.

Those grips (rubber?) look quite dried out and cracked. Likely to disintegrate when attempting to remove them. Again, likely a case of more trouble than they're worth trying to save them.

Not wanting to throw cold water on your project. Just adding some observations from afar. Good luck.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

I'm a little confused. Are you saying you want to save the grips on the shafts you are taking out?

I am pretty sure these grips

are molded to the shafts. They are not slip ons. I may be wrong

not messing with the grips at all.

the S code stands for heavy weight heads. my set has the diamond stamp which were a bit lighter and made for a regular shaft.

check this page regarding the Syncho-Dyned designation, about two thirds of the way down for the Spalding iron section.

hope when you get them finished you enjoy them a whole bunch.

I have looked and looked and never could find what th S stood for. I’m going to replace them with a set of TT lites A flex or a set of Dynalites regular flex and Tacki Mac or tour wraps. Grips will not be effected on old shafts and every effort will be made to keep the ferrules. An aside, back in the early seventies I played a lot of golf with my banker that played a set of 53 Top Flites. I always thought they were cool.

the ones I have are a bit earlier than yours Richard.

one set has Spalding in script on the sole, Top Flite on the back and the original grips.

second set has Spalding in block letters, Robt T Jones on the back. sadly, those came with nasty dried out grips.

both might be late forties. (like me) LOL.

Is it only the Spalding Top-Flite Syncro-Dyned shafts that are screw-in or did the Tournament Models also use screw-in shafts? I would not take these shafts out, just keep looking for another set that has either the triangle or diamond. The designations went S, then triangle, then diamond, then circle with dot and finally the C.

I would guess it's an unintended side effect of the software transition. The language filter that came as the default for this application probably hasn't been adjusted yet by those running the WRX show. I'd guess they're focusing their efforts on bigger issues, but this will eventually be adjusted.

I mean, it's not just the classic folks who are affected, adjustable clubs have skrewz also. :)
