Agreed - the top of the "L" looks especially off.

They must have used the tour issue stamps on the first one.

That is why is is called HAND stamping. You will never get the exact same stamp twice. There will be slight variations when things are done by a human being.

I am going to have this putter sent back, welded, and restamped. I find this hugely annoying.

it definitely doesn't like like it's been engraved by the machine.

i would rather take charteristic handstamp over machine engrave any given day.

The stamps are also going to look different on different milling patterns. You have putters with 2 different distinct milling patterns. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t fix this for free. They did nothing wrong on their end.

It looks like the 'L' may have had a slight "double stamp"/"ghosting", wherein they sort of fixed it only by going deeper. I've encountered this stamping myself, and usually if it's a close match you can sort of join the two impressions with one larger one, however, the letter tends to look a bit washed out and fat.

I'm very particular about my putters but that would not bother me at all. There's going to be some variability to hand stamping. The idea of having that welded over and remilled is, to me, completely insane.

I also don't think it was a double stamp. It looks like the person stamping hit the stamp more on the end to the top of the "L" than the bottom. So it drove down deeper and wider at the top. I've done it before and I don't consider it a serious flaw.

I'd have to bet it will look worse if you send it back for weld and re-stamp. Surface textures aren't going to match up.
  • rcb1586rcb1586 Advanced Members Posts: 359 ✭✭
That looks horrible to me but will probably look even worse if you try to have them fix it.

I get that there is always some variability in hand stamping but none of that is close to being in line and the G and L look to be different sizes.

I'd remove the paint fill so it's not as noticeable and move on.

That looks good to me and would not be bothered by it. The custom shop does a great job pretty much every time and their qc process is pretty good too. I’ve known guys who had to wait longer because the new paint wasn’t right and the shop wouldn’t rekease it

It's obviously mid-February... is this really a topic?

OP, you're asking for opinions and mine is that it looks fine. Is the issue with the periods? The slight flare at the top of the L? As mentioned before, different (deeper) milling patterns increase the likelihood for stamping anomalies if the edge of the stamp falls right on a mill groove.

If it is unsatisfactory to YOU (which is the only thing that should matter), raise the issue with the CS and get it fixed. Good luck. image/hi.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':hi:' />

That is not double stamped. The top of the L being larger just means that the stamp was being held not perfectly flat when the hammer blows hit the shank of the stamp and it left a little bit deeper impression of that long piece at the top. Hand stamping is not perfect, and I don't think the wider piece of the L warrants the reaction. If you wanted it perfect you could have had it laser engraved. That being said, it is pretty off-center from the dog, but the Custom Shop forms do say that they have the right to stamp based on how they see fit - so that basically means they aren't going to change anything for free. The paint not being perfectly straight around the edges of the stamp is because of the milling pattern. It looks fine until you zoom in on it.
